When I was in college, I interned at a US Army battery laboratory where they were researching lithium batteries. These batteries were to be used in the equipment for the soldiers. The running joke at the lab was that if the soldiers ever ran out of grenades, they could just throw the lithium batteries at the enemy.

We've gone from internal combustion engines to spontaneously combustion engines.😂 JJ

The EV deaths haven't shocked the industry enough because we're still getting the things shoved in our faces left and right.
I wouldn't have an EV if they were the only vehicles made.

As a fire investigator for my local department, I can say this video is essentially 100% accurate. I have watched EV batteries sit in a commercial size garbage bin filled with water try to self ignite for hours. These things do not take well to damage, and the thermal runaway is a constant hazard that requires special knowledge and equipment to shut down quickly.

He speaks the truth. My sister and I went to look at a Ford Mustang she wanted to buy. We had just had localized flooding near the Ohio River where we live. It was a Fox body and a hatchback. There was something about the smell I couldn't quite put my finger on; I looked at the brackets under the seat and the dashboard and they were rusty. It wasn't until I lowered the rear seatback and discovered the mud underneath it. I told the salesman (that was a friend of mine) that I wasn't interested and that he was talking to me, not Joe Public. I then showed him the mud. He claimed he knew nothing. I might have been born at night, but it wasn't last night. Great video!

I bought a Ridged 18V combo pack at Home Depot a few years ago and the batteries had production screw ups that made the batteries randomly catch on fire. I was shocked at how aggressive lithium battery fires were. I also bought a Tracfone when my phone broke and after I got my replacement I took out the Tracfone battery and smacked it with a hammer. HOLY FACK did that fire get aggressive and FAST. It was fricken scary. NO EV'S FOR ME...PERIOD.

Scotty, the trouble all started when they thought they could build a better car than the 94 Celica.

I was an engineer pursuing my masters degree and studying Lithium-Ion batteries and came across this phenomenon. That was in 2002! I wrote a paper on it, shared it with my professor and tried to get the paper published. It wasn’t published. This has been suppressed for two decades now!

There was one that spontaneously combusted in Norfolk when I was living there and it burned under an overpass and melted the steel beams in the overpass causing it to be shut down. The local news said that it burned at temperatures exceeding 4500 degrees which is hotter than crucible temperatures used to melt steel. I'm good with my 25 year old Toyota Avalon with 160000 on it. And I'm sure when the new tesla owners are buying their second battery or ev my Toyota will still be running fine.

The problem with batteries as power storage is that the energy inside doesn't need oxygen + heat to be released, so once it's compromised it's really difficult to stop it.

I remember when we first got some hybrid locomotives "green goats". They used massive batteries that were occasionally recharged by a smaller diesel engine. There was a whole bunch of fire suppression switches. We had asked someone from the fire department what to do if the locomotive ignited. He told us, just get out and walk/run away. That thing ain't going out any time soon. This was almost 20 years ago and it was a known thing. So all this is nothing new.

I have often noted that my local shopping centre, here in Queensland, there is a row of charging stations next to the exit of the underground parking station. It has a low roof so no fire truck can enter and there is only one other exit. Most times there is at least one car on charge there.

We never had fires from the electric cars we had back in the 60s. We ran 'em hard, flipped 'em over, ran thru guardrails, put 'em back on the slot car track and kept going.

Imagine these EVs up here in the snow belt after being exposed to road salt after a few years.

Well, that decides for me whether to buy a hybrid car. Thank you very much for this life saving information! I have never heard any of this!

I've put out several carburetor fires over the past forty years worse case scenario was repainting the hood, but I don't want anything to do with a EV fire.

The firefighters can't really say that they "put out" the fire by pumping 20, 000 gallons of water on it for a couple hours. I'd say that they just pumped water until the fire exhausted it's fuel.

Nothing that a never-ending stream of lawsuits can't resolve once and for all.

Was thinking about how to spot water damage recently, as eastern Australia has been having flood after flood in the last 6 months, so many cars submerged. I guess poke an inspection camera into a body cavity and look for rust would do it. This was one of your best ever Scotty! Don’t ever quit.
