When I was in 8th grade, 300 8th graders or so from my middle school that had one specific science teacher all went on a three day trip to Catalina island, whites landing. That night a super nova exploded (meaning the light finally reached us) and we got to see it through a telescope. (Well my group did)

This means that the star exploded, formed a neutron star over 70 million years ago and we earthlings over looked the fireworks. Boy, are humans really late to the party.

That's cool. All we have is mathematical representations and conjecture because the timescale of stars is so long. But when a critical event like this occurs, with a major boundary condition or change, it lets us apply new ideas and helps confirm the physics we were already thinking of.
