Fun fact: it can take weeks for a supernova to reach peak brightness, and a few years for it to fully expand. In contrast, it takes just a fraction of a second for the mass of a star to collapse onto the iron core that would be produced by a dying star. It would also take a couple hours for the outward shockwave from the collapsed mass to go from the corr to the surface of the star.
