This ancient ruin was on a 200 ft. cliff edge. I knew I had to hike to it!

Get a helmet mounted go pro so you can use your hands dude. We can't loose you. You're the only way I get to see this cool stuff.

The particular structure u r looking at was used for community food storage. When a family (tribe) was not numerous enough to defend themselves in direct battle they became heavily dependent on defensive protection. Their biggest problem was shortage of water. This caused them to live close to the base of their defensive cliff positions only to ascend when fear of attack occurred.

Great that you can document these places that are so ancient. Thank you for sharing places that most of us will never be able to see or visit.

Looks like New Mexico..they built homes on cliffs so they weren't easy to get attacked..I'm pueblo native ..we still have family that live on cliffs

I believe I know where this place is… You need the $1 permit so the ranger knows who’s in the canyon. Most likely that is a place for food storage being that high up. This prevented other hostile tribes from stealing their food. Some required some type of ladder to get to.

These places are a priceless heritage. People need to take care of them. They were not respected in the past.

The native American tribes were in a state of constant warfare with each other way back in the day and often built homes and settlements in places that would be hard for their enemies to get to, or see. I know of a canyon deep in the forest of northern Arizona, about 30 miles south of the grand canyon that has evidence of people building small structures up in the canyon walls. I also found little lookout spots at the beginning, middle and end of the canyon which were pits dug into the top of the canyon with rock walls built around them with an open spot to enter. They blend in really well and I didn't notice them my first few times at the canyon.

You know you have serious enemies when carving a protective fortress out of a cliff face seems like a good idea.

Maybe from an off-shoot of the Sinagua tribe. They often used cliff dwellings for all the reasons listed here. The name "Sinagua" is Spanish for "Without Water." I think the petroglyph is a canoe for travel in wet, monsoon season when they were "with water".

It’s a watch tower. The port holes on the side look at different directions. There’s a documentary that explains those particular ruins.

I think it was a good place to store food. High from flash floods/dry and safe from animals.

I think the petroglyph represented what was stored in the building; so that from across the canyon you could easily make out which storage building you were headed toward at a glance.
