n this video we're going to cover all the questions that we regularly get asked about gain staging. What is gain staging? How do you set up proper gain staging so that you can make professional mixes? How about gain staging for live mixing.

This is a highly requested topic, with everyone seeming to be talking about it and chopping in thier opinion! This is a good thing but it also leads to confusion.

You'll learn some essential tips for proper gain structure that every great audio engineer understands.

The three guidelines are:

Don't clip the mix bus!

Find any loud sources and reduce them or simply lower all your faders to avoid digital clipping on the master bus.

Optimise Plugin Performance:

Use a trim or gain plugin to make sure that your plugins are receiving the right level - which many quote as -18 dBfs RMS (roughly 0VU). This will reduce the chances of unwanted distortion and ensure that they are working in the sweet spot.

Optimise fader position for maximum precision:

Add a trim plugin at the end of your effects chain so that you can use it to add or remove gain. This will help you get your fader
Higher on the mixer and give you more resolution.

●Bottom Line

Pretty much all mastering engineers use this as a standard because it gives them some room to work with

I gain stage with the knobs in the channel rack and the direct volume knob in each vst used. Vu meters are good for wav files and vocals.

Another gain staging video where the creator is not showing how to gain stage drums because they can't be gain staged with the VU meter.
By the time you get to OVU, the drum is already clipping.

You better gainstage your voice. It's out of balance with the music you're playing an hard to hear.
