As disoriented as Indy was, he managed to use his one shot with the flaming Shish-Kabob he had on his friend's killer...instead of Che himself.
That's some true friendship.

Indy wearing the same white dinner jacket that Sean Connery wore in Goldfinger...like father like son.

One of the best opening scene of cinema history.

This entire movie is a visual feast. A master class in blocking, shot composition, action choreography, etc.

Can we appreciate how great the orchestrations are for Anything Goes? I would love to hear an orchestra-only track. Johnny Williams tapping into his Old Hollywood roots!

Spielberg invented the ten-minute mini movie before the real movie starts

One of the slickest openings ever. Love how the camera takes us from damsel, to villain, to hero.

People may hate this movie but you can’t deny that this opening scene was amazing.

Childhood is thinking Raiders and Crusade are the best. Maturity is recognizing how amazing Temple of Doom is.

This'll get me crucified, but this is my favourite film in the trilogy!

Originally Spielberg and Lucas wanted to make a James Bond movie but opted for Indiana Jones instead using assets from 1941's failure, that's why this scene feels like it's reminiscent of a Bond movie and also why Sean Connery is Henry Jones Sr

I love that we can call this the "Club Obi Wan" scene.

When I saw this movie as a kid I wanted to travel the world so bad. I wanted to know Sanskrit, Hindi, various Chinese dialects, historical tidbits off the drop of a hat. I grew up to be a programmer ... who lived in maybe 5 countries, spoke multiple languages (not well, but there's some Sanskrit, Mandarin, and Cantonese in there), and had plenty of dangerous scrapes. I now realize that it was this movie that pushed me in this direction. This scene in particular, for some reason. It is so flamboyantly absurd, but at the same time bizarrely nostalgic for a time and place most of us are too young to remember. It's full of logistical inconsistencies - like the tap dancers seeming to perform behind the dragon's mouth where no one can see them. But on the other hand it is extremely precise. Lao Che seems to be a Manchu, and his name has echoes of the Manchu novelist Lao She. The Machus were big in organized crime in the 30s, and it would make sense that he would want the remains of the first Qing emperor. Not only that, but Indy doesn't settle for Mandarin or Cantonese (like Short Round, probably due to Quan's Sino-Vietnamese background). He speaks Shanghainese! So badass. And that little Chinese-ey flourish at the end of "Anything Goes" gives me goosebumps even to this day.

I based the suit I wore to prom on Indy’s suit in this scene. Felt good.

Always broke my heart hearing Indy's friend's last words as he died in his arms. He, indeed, went into the unknown first this time around.
