Long term future proofing! I have a small 2 disk synology and it's amazing for local storage and backups.

If I had a Snology NAS, I would use it for storing all my creative projects and as a pled server. That $500 gift card would probably go towards the purchase of one and/or the drives.

Thanks for the giveaway Jon. I dont own a synology, but if I had the extra income to purchase one, I'll use it as my cloud storage to save photos and videos of my family. Its said that the only true timemachine that exists are photos/ videos. Its the only way to relive those precious moments. In short, I'll use it as my timemachine.

I don’t synology but if I did I would keep my documents for emt class. I am a paramedic retired because of medical problems but keep myself busy teaching and testing students and I collect a lot of information for them. I just bought into apples online storage but wanted a solid on premises device to info. Enjoy your vids.

I’d create my dream library of storing videos/b-roll and anything I feel that might even be a bit useful, I’d keep. (In the least hoarder-esq way possible)

It’s like 60mb a picture in raw, insanity. So easy to fill up. Time for some 20tb drives haha.

I don’t disagree that Apple charges an insane amount for storage in their devices, and especially now that it’s soldered and you can’t replace it, that’s a huge argument for going for something like Synology for storage, however i disagree strongly with you guys doing a direct comparison in price per TB between the two. Apple, in their devices, gives you some of the fastest SSDs on the market. The 96TB option in the Synology is spinning disks with a tenth of the performance.

Not to knock the Synology though, it’s a fantastic product I’ve used with multiple customers for years. If they weren’t so silly expensive for just the chassis without drives, I’d get one for home as well to store 15 years of professional photos on, but alas, nothing yet.

I thought about doing Synology back in November, but I ended up just building an unraid server instead.

Hi Jon, so much great information, thank you, because I am new to the nas. I just started doing wildlife YouTube videos and I am accumulating a lot of data(to me, getting about 1tb of data a week). I have been storing my current footage on 6, 2tb Samsung T7 and finished data on 6 G technogy 5tb drives. I just got the Mac Studio with 8tb ssd, and I am to resorting to storing some data on there, which I dont want to do. I do go back and delete from the drives. But now, the data is coming faster than I have to time to delete, which is a good thing. I am looking to get a 60-80tb NAS. . I am using final cut to edit, but I have been putting the footage and creating the library and project right on the mac, and that seems to be the fastest. I was looking at the 1621 and now the 1522 has come, what do you suggest for my needs? Thank you for any suggestion. I am new the NAS and anything would help. I have been an Oracle programmer for 30 years, so I have some computer knowledge, but not with networks. I would ask the network guy when I had issues.🤔 THANKS
