It has now been over 2 years since Omega and Swatch pulled off one of the biggest release events in recent wrist watch history. But what exactly went down? Why did so many swatch boutiques had to get the police involved on release day 👀
In this video I recap everything about the MoonSwatch release!

Thank you for watching!

Most watch tubers were active participants in the hype. It's easy to place "blame" on the brand's viral marketing campaign, but a lot folks, specially influencers, turned the hype into madness (which predictably turned into a big disappointment).

It’s great that it got more people interested in watches. My main issue was the plastic. If they had used standard material, or even tried to mimic Casio… it could have been a killer product. Decent durability along with great design… I’d even look past the terrible strap because it’s so easy to replace it with a decent $20 one. But the fact that they portrayed that the material was extra strong when it was actually weaker… that was unethical. They should have just used their standard plastic and not lean heavy into durability. Things would have been fine but active deception isn’t ok. I almost bought one of these watches before I discovered the truth. My alternative? Bulova Lunar Pilot second hand for less than $300. I even got the leather and NATO straps with it. Great deal and very happy with the watch.

I just purchased a Moonswatch Mission to the Moonphase in white while in Hawaii visiting my granddaughter. I bought it just because I wanted to have one. Well that, and I am a dog love Snoopy and his wingman Woodstock in the subdial. Waited until way after the hype... it's the only one I own. (for now, might get the black moon phase one to complete the pair)

The MoonSwatch was the first watch I ever paid any attention to. It gained so much traction that even people who weren’t interested in watches were seeing it. I started watching Teddy’s videos and eventually set my sights on a GS Snowflake. One year and about a million other candidate watches later, I bought that SBGA011 as my first watch.

I am literally into watches because of the MoonSwatch. I bought a GS …because of the MoonSwatch.

Great look back; it was quite a big deal. But you left one thing out: Swatch DID tweet that they would also be sold online, then reneged.

You and Kai should do another collab video answering questions or talking about other watch world happenings. Merry Xmas!

Definitely a Masterclass in studying what ratio of humans have a mental capacity lower than Dory the fish.

I solely blame Britt Pearce...aka Watch Gringa for stoking up the hype..she even got you online the night before....her live video with news from Fratello and other sources made me pack my rucksack and start the most memorable event of recent times...queing with watch lovers...listening to their stories .... an event that was unique and unrepeatable 😊😊😊😊😊

Indeed - a quartz crisis overview would be great

I thought (and still think) it was a great idea and I’m sure it has brought people into watches who would otherwise have never got involved. I’d already been a watch collector for decades but with a strongly vertical collection that didn’t encompass the Speedy - nonetheless I’d always sort of given the Speedies a covetous sideways glance from time to time. So, after three unsuccessful attempts with none in stock, I finally managed to grab a Neptune in Munich a year ago now. Did it scratch that Speedy itch? Not quite, I’ve gone out and bought 3 Omega Speedmasters since! But I’ve also carried on buying Moonswatches too and hit 8 yesterday with the purchase of an Earth phase. The vocal detractors say people are deluding themselves that they have a Speedy but I think there is a sizeable contingent just like me who know exactly what they’re getting into and still find them fun.

I love my Speedy and probably would have bought the whole collection if they were easier to get. I don‘t like and have the time waiting in line for hours at a Store that is a 2 hour drive away or like to pay scalpers double the price. After some weeks the hype was over for me. I got my hands on a snoopy moonswatch this summer and that‘s it for me.

It is a masterclass in short-term strategy. They chose the hyped up sugar-hit of massive sales for 12-18 months, where as if they managed the release better, and priced them where they should've been priced ($100-150 USD) they could've had a great long term money spinner. Instead they killed the goose that laid the golden egg.
Aside from the low build quality, the watch itself is cool and a great idea, as much as the permanently online watch people claim to dislike it.
The blancpain 50 Fathoms doubled down on the wildly over-priced mistakes of the MoonSwatch and are a masterclass in reading yhe wrong lessons from a successful product.

I stopped at the first moon swatch. They was enough for me

It was a brilliant move and a fun way to celebrate the Moonwatch, various Omega projects, and our journey into space. QC could have been better and for that reason, my Mission to Mars stays in the box.

I got sucked into the hype, bought one, looks nice, however In hindsight, a Seiko 5 is a far better purchase if you want a nice watch at a decent price.

"Masterclass in marketing"? This award really has to go to harley davidson... Getting people to buy an underpowered 1920's technological dog, then pimping out "accessories" with their logo, to meet the "image"? MoonSwatch has to go some way to get people into having a tatoo or g-string with their logo.
I'm still keeping my mission to earth, though.

I can see why it was successful. It’s an affordable replica of the iconic Speedmaster put out by the same company. It’s a two-edged sword, though, as it’s sure to diminish the sales and the value of the actual Speedmaster, and if I still owned a Speedmaster, I’d be a bit miffed. When I’m in the market for another watch, Omega won't be on the consideration list, and if I wanted an affordable one, I'd get a Seiko not a Swatch.

If only the watch was half as good as the marketing . . . 🧐
