The Complete Story Of MoonSwatch Madness | A Week On The Wrist

Without warning, two days before the stated launch date, news broke on the internet and we finally saw it: A Bioceramic Swatch that was a near carbon copy of a Moonwatch, but in Swatch form. And it was called … The MoonSwatch.

Having only seen the watch in person briefly at launch, I was particularly excited at the prospect of spending the week with not one, but two models: The Mission to Mars and the Mission to Jupiter (there were 11 in total: Mission to Earth, The Moon, Jupiter, Uranus, The Sun, Mars, Pluto, Saturn, Neptune, Mercury, and Venus).

It should be mentioned, at this time at least, the moonSwatch is not accessible. It’s not available online, not everyone lives near a swatch store and even if you do, the chances they have stock is low. The longer this situation persists, the less interested I am in this watch. After the launch craziness, this watch should have been made truly accessible, but it’s not and that’s a shame.

The moonswatch is an Omega appetizer to wake up the new generation to Omega.

I have to give Swatch credit, they sold a $60 watch for $280

It's a bit disappointing that this video doesn't address the many defects that have come up with the chronometer function and the plastic coating of paint peeling off on the back of the watch on many MoonSwatch models. I think Hodinkee can be more critical here beyond just pointing out the tacky stickers on the bezel, etc.

Was looking forward to get one. No stock. Ended up with an automatic Seiko 5

I was in line at Times Square from 1AM and most of the young "hype" crowd cut the line in the morning. Got pushed back a good 20 spots in line from people jumping out of cars and meeting up with their friends, luckily still got one.

4:26 “So what makes this Watch worth $260?” This is an interesting question - because the cost/value of this MoonSwatch is most likely more closely aligned with its intrinsic materials and manufacturing costs than say an Omega, IWC, Rolex whose retail prices are 90% marketing, brand equity and celebrity ambassador costs…

Love the idea of this collection. Saw the Mission to Jupiter and immediately got some IWC Mojave Desert vibes. Being in Vegas, I saw that we had one Swatch store carry the collection and wanted to see in person and they had a Jupiter and the rest is history. On a tan NATO, this thing is great. As mentioned, QC could be better and it is overpriced even at retail but it makes me happy

If you need a "quality" cheap watch it's Casio all the way!

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding who this watch is targeting tbh. I've been a watch lover ever since I was in middle school and continue to be one as a broke college student, so when I saw the opportunity to own an iconic design for a fraction of the cost I jumped on it. If you're buying multiple several thousand dollar watches I can see how this watch is a "toy" to you, but for someone like me, this is a watch like any other and I don't treat it like a toy. I've had my Mission to Pluto for a few weeks now and have loved every second of it, despite a ton of people discrediting the watch. Stop hating on a cool project and rejoice the fact that more people are getting into the hobby we all love so dearly.

I have the mission to Jupiter and I like it. It matches the way I dress - I usually dress in monochromatic neutrals. I also got a beige/tan NATO straps to switch it around. I wear an Omega Seamaster 120m, two tone Constellation, or Cartier Tank as my daily watches for work, but I found those watches too formal for casual days out or days not at work. I used my Apply watch on the weekends before, but I really dislike that I have to charge it daily. Charging my phone and laptop daily is already too much for me. The Mission to Jupiter became my current weekend/casual day out watch. I really liked that it’s very lightweight too. It feels like my wrist is having a rest.

In as much as I enjoyed my Mission to Jupiter, I won’t queue for it nor would I pay above retail. I was just lucky to get a hold of it. I was traveling to the US, NYC in particular, and there was a Swatch store below my hotel. I entered the store not to buy a watch, but to ask where the nearest pharmacy was to buy some bottled water and get some medicine. The staff was really nice and helped me with the direction towards the nearest Pharmacy. When I was about to leave I spotted the display for the Moonswatch, and the Mission to Jupiter caught my eye. I asked the staff if it was available not really expecting, as I’ve read they quite difficult to get a hold of. The staff went to the back to check, and when he came out there it was. He said I’m quite lucky, since it just arrived and was there only one stock of the Mission Jupiter that arrived.

At first I wanted one, but now I have no interest. I remember when Timex came out with the Q Reissue there was a lot of hype, of course nothing approaching this, but you could not get the watch and people were selling them on ebay for triple the price. However, with the Timex Q which is my favorite watch you got a stainless steel quality watch and not a plastic toy. Funny thing is when I wear my pepsi bezel Q a couple of people thought it was a Rolex.

I'm so happy I didn't got one. Now after seeing all QC issues and how much of a Toy Watch feeling it have I'm glad I got to save this 260$ and put it towards a real mechanical watch that will actually outlast me

I’ve owned 4 different variations of the Speedy - Hesalite, Sapphire, Racing, and Coaxial, and I thought the MoonSwatch was a gimmick. I picked up the Mercury on a lark and I have to admit, it nearly gives me the same feeling as the authentic Speedy except you feel pretty clever because you haven’t had to spend thousands of dollars.

A refreshingly articulate take on the recent ‘Moonswatch’ phenomenon.

Dissapointed in the fact that Omega has failed to deliver in its promise and aim for the project to make the design of the speedmaster accessible to all watch enthusiasts, by going back on their online sale promise and by have basically no stock in any stores.

The Speedmaster for me is one of my all time favorite watches, a grail of mine that I know one day ill own. Thought this can bring you closer to it, yes its not the original, thought its original in itself. Its unique and a really hype historic moment in the watch community, never have we seen something like this. This has been an amazing marketing, whoever thought about this wow, and they also clearly underestimating the people. This has 2 sides of the coin...flippers and grey market hurts the industry, we can clearly see it here. I hope this isn't limited and in the future they can sell it online. That would be a hit back to all those people, but also feel sad for those who bought it above retail. At the end if this brings more new watch people its amazing. Still its an amazing watch to own in any collection.

P.T. Barnum quotes still ring true!
Seriously, years ago I purchased a limited production Swatch made for a famous camera, 10+ yrs later, the plastic band yellowed & broke at the lugs. At least the watch still works but I can't place any other band on it. I enjoyed all the hype though!
