I find compression first gives a fuller signal of audio and allows me to hear the problem areas easier

Do both: subtractive before, additive after, then compress again.

My usual chain:

EQ > Compress > EQ > Compress > Limit

Also stepp is before you at do anything make sure you listen to the whole vocal dry for any hidden problems

Dont forget that a compressor can also act as an eq/timed eq. The faster the attack the more it attenuates shorter wavelengths ie high frequencies

Compression is primarily controlling dynamics not boosting, that’s a secondary benefit. All that to say, if the incoming signal isn’t too problematic, compression first is worth considering

A Japanese engineer lead me to Devvon. Been tuning in ever since

I agree, ever since I began EQ first the vocals are more clear and easy to handle

In audio engineering school, it’s subtractive EQ then compression.

Always EQ before compression but I’ve never de-Essed before my initial compressor… I like this logic though, totally makes sense how you put it, I’m gonna try it out. Nice one

Some compression can present different harmonics to the sound after the EQ has been added first as well so it just depends for me.

(Autotune>) Eq> compress > desser > Eq > limiter

Compression squishes everything together. Doesn’t really care what you like or don’t about the signal. I like to eq and de-s after for a precise look at that I’m doing. Obviously you can do what you like though 👍

I'll sometimes put a de-esser after each compressor on a vocal.

I get exactly what you saying, I know a lot of others compress first but if u doing bedroom vocals u better be eq-ing first. Lol. Unless u got a solid studio booth
