So here is this little tale of mine, just happened a few hours ago, I finally managed, after long and hard work to get my thesis for a degree accepted by the jury, this means I will get (hopefully) a certain raise in my salary and may have a few good opportunities, so, here comes my father and congratulates me and invites me to dine, I accept, he congratulates me again at the restaurant, tells me how I must take advantage of my new degree to get new opportunities and then proceeds to tell me about this young friend of him (a physician, like my father) who just happened to be getting a higher academic degree, earns 9 times my salary, has a wife and kids and his own apartment, things I don't have.

During the entire speech, which I actually knew was going to happen, I smiled and bowed, each point of comparison like a hot knife to the heart, like a spit to the face, from my own father, I knew he wasn't trying to insult me, no, for him it was encouragement, good advice, but at that moment, in my heart of hearts I couldn't care less he was my father and a physician taking care of children with disabilities, or that he too earned so much more than me and had worked for the poor and the needed and was a self-made man.

I just wanted to tell him to shut up.


It was even more ironic the whole thing happened in April's Fool, it's almost like a cosmic joke, and then people wonder why we are so stressed out, at least back when it was the law of the jungle, before social contracts, you knew what to expect, a stone axe to the face and wolves at the entry of the cave, here, in our oh so enlightened society, you can't even enjoy a small moment of triumph without someone (often your own family) coming to throw crap at you and expect it to eat it gladly.
