What is a redundancy situation?

Redundancy is a form of dismissal from your job and it is a fair way for an employer to dismiss an employee. It happens when the employer needs to reduce their workforce and this can be for a range of reasons.

If you’re being made redundant, you might be eligible for certain rights, including:

• redundancy pay

• a notice period

• a consultation with your employer

• the option to move into a different job

• time off to find a new job

There must be a fair process for selection and criteria for choosing who will be made redundant.

Expert employment solicitor James Johnson answers questions and explains the redundancy process.

• Does an employer have to find an employee an alternative role?

• Does the employee have to take the alternative role?

• What happens if you put forward a viable alternative to redundancy and it is ignored by your employer?
