In season 1 you see Howard as the asshole. He's rich, he seems smarmy and smug and insincere towards Jimmy.

Then as the show goes on you realise more and more that he's one of the few characters in the show with true integrity, someone who is always honest and sincere.

I always thought it was kind of a reverse Breaking Bad. At the start of BB you see Walt as a victim but by the end of the show he's the villain. In BCS Howard starts out as Jimmy's villain, but he ends up a victim. Patrick Fabian did an amazing job.
