Howard was the most pointlessly abused character in the show. Jimmy hated him because Chuck made it seem like it was Howard who was blocking Jimmy for no reason, and he went along with it because he really had no choice. Chuck had the power to dissolve the firm if he wanted to, as they didn’t have the operating account to buy out Chuck. He was also protecting Jimmy in a way from learning that his brother didn’t want him to become a lawyer.

Later on, after Chuck he deliberately goes out and tries to get Jimmy on board and reconcile, but instead he gets abused, made to appear like a drug addict, humiliated and eventually murdered.

He wasn’t a perfect person and made mistakes, but no more than the rest of us. He just seems like a guy trying to live up to his father and become a successful lawyer by playing by the rules and navigating difficult social situations as they come.
