The exposure of an alleged Chinese agent at Westminster has highlighted the controversy over the country's relationship with the People's Republic.

The Cities of London & Westminster Liberal Democrats are pleased to host this topical discussion on a vital issue that touches foreign and domestic policy.

Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable is the author of The China Conundrum: Engagement or Conflict, a book that argues against a US-led “cold war” with China.

"Snubbing modern China will do nothing for human rights, domestic security or global stability. We should be committed to working with and influencing this rising superpower – without illusions, but also without fear.” he says.

Edward Lucas, prospective parliamentary candidate for the Cities of London & Westminster, is the former editor of the China Influence Monitor, a weekly newsletter that exposes and counters Chinese Communist Party influence in the West.

He coined the phrase “Hegemonic Discourse Control” to describe Chinese Communist Party attempts to silence critics and control discussion. “Our media, academic and political freedom are at risk” he argues.

So who’s wrong? Are the “China-hawks” creating an unnecessary and fruitless confrontation? Or are the “China-doves” paving the way to the West’s eclipse by a totalitarian superpower?
