For the last example, you said [1 0 0] and [0 1 0] is another basic for H, but those two vectors span the xy-plane and the original two vectors span some diagonal plane. If they have different spans, how are they both a basis for H? Also, the original second vector has a number in the third entry, which is not in any of the two reduced vectors.

Is the fact that v3 and v4 are free variables have any effect on them being excluded from the span or is it more the linear dependence thing?

At 9:20 the basis B you wrote isn't a basis for H.
