Note: if all companies would actually label what their cables can do on the cable itself that would go a long way. The standardized labels exist, they're just not being used.

“Some cables are used for external monitors, some dont”. This ruined my school presentation once…. In the fuken school auditorium

The "looks the same but different speed/features" has always been true, even in the mini/micro usb days.

Going from all the different ports and cables to having one port but different cables has made things a lot better. It's a step in the right direction

"There are 15 competing standards"
"That's awful, i'll make one standard to unite them all"
Result: "There are 16 competing standards"

At least the headache of trying to insert the cable the right way is over.
Insert it any way you like

As a person without any of those worries. Being able to charge my phone, headphones, tablet and controllers with one cord is friggin great

"Hey Fred, what happens when we plug 10 volts in the 5 volt slot?"

"We find new jobs, Barny."

Welcome to the world of USB, where practically nothing has changed. Except things are still better than they used to be, and just as confusing

It's an improvement. Now it's only 1 connector, but still all the other caveats.

“So is it the same cable?”
“Yes but actually no”

Electronics engineer here, the trouble is usb C while awesome is a really really complicated standard. Many of the items in the spec are optional and it’s really expensive to add all the stuff to make a 40 gbps cable AND have it do 100W of power. So companies cut corners and implement only what their product needs from the spec thus breaking the perfect compatibility :/

Might charge slower or not give you full res, but that's still better than not being able to use it at all. The new labelling with speed and power ratings should help a lot.

You were supposed to destroy the sith, not join them.

Couldn't find anyone else mentioning this, so i will. The transfer speeds you showed are in Giga**bits** (Gb) not Giga**bytes** (GB). The difference is a difference of 8 times, 1 byte is 8 bits.

Yeah man. They also sell tvs in different sizes, internet plans at different speeds, and sometimes they even sell the same foods made with different ingredients. It’s absolute anarchy out here.

Put engineers back in charge, get rid of the marketing guys, and the hr department, and we can go back to standards and interoperability.
