The dark Lords who reigned during the days of the old republic made the sith of the rule of two era look weak and pathetic. With the exception of Palpatine and possibly Vader, almost all of the ancient sith outranked them both in skill with the lightsaber and the force. Ancient Sith could raise armies of the dead, create monsters of pure dark side energy and at least a few sith lords were capable of destroying entire planets using only the force. One of the main reasons for this was the loss of knowledge through the ages, largely due to the inheritant weaknesses of the sith ideology.
The great hyperspace war saw the sith species strike the Republic for the first time, starting the conflict between the sith and the jedi that would last for millennia. After the sith were defeated, the Jedi enacted a genocide against the sith Species, destroying much of their knowledge on more advanced dark side abilities.
However, Lord Vitiate maintained knowledge and rediscovered many of these abilities, hiding the sith empire in the unknown regions for over a thousand years. Again though, this would not benefit the sith as a whole. In a bid to prevent his followers from ever overthrowing him, he kept most of this knowledge for himself. This meant that when he was finally defeated, the knowledge of these powers was gone forever.
After the death of Vitiate, the sith would further be weakened by infighting. Often many lesser sith would team up to destroy the more powerful dark lords, weakening the order overall in power.
While the rule of two did fix this issue, it added the problem that if one sith died or turned to the light before fully training an apprentice, vital knowledge would be lost forever.
A great example of this was with Darth Gravid. Gravid sought to intergate Jedi teachings of compassion into the Sith teachings. However he would be driven insane in the process and sought to destroy much of the Siths knowledge. He would be stopped by his apprentice but not before he had destroyed many Holocrons pertaining knowledge of the most powerful dark side abilities. As Darth Plageius would note, Gravids actions set the Sith back centuries.
However it was not just Darth Gravid that slowed the progress of the sith. Due to their sith ideology, rule of two sith continued to jealously guard secrets from their apprentices.
Plageius would kill his master before finding out about tennenbous study of maxi-chlorians, a way to grant eternal life. Palgeuis too would be killed by his own apprentice, Sidioius before he could pass on the knowledge of how to gain immortality.
And this is the ultimate reason why the sith became less powerful over time. While the Jedi worked together to share secrets about the force, the sith jealously guarded their newfound abilities from other sith and more often than not, they would take their dark side knowledge to the grave. This prevented the sith order as a whole from benefiting from advancements, Ultimately leading to their power diminishing over the ages.
