Hello and welcome to episode 128 of the Kit & Krysta Podcast. This week, we're starting our long goodbye to Nintendo Switch by digging into 20 reasons why it was SO incredibly successful. A lot of things had to go just right for Switch to be a hit and the pressure was definitely on at Nintendo to make sure it went well. Nintendo Switch will always hold a very special place in our hearts because it was the last system we launched at Nintendo so it feels great to reflect back on what happened over these past 7 years. Also in this episode, we react to the reveal of Emio and talk about what the new Joy-Con charging accessory really means. We wrap it all up with questions from our amazing Patreon family.

An underrated aspect of the Switch that I would consider separate from the portability, is how well the Switch can connect on and off the dock itself. I have 3 docks in the house, so I can play in the basement/ living room/bedroom whenever and the Switch is not locked to 1 room in the house like other consoles.

It was harder than expected to get actual concrete numbers, please forgive the napkin math. The Wii had 56 Nintendo published titles from 2006-2012, that’s a average of 8 a year. The DS had 104 from 2004-2012, averaging around 12 a year. The Switch has had 111 from 2017-2024, averaging 14 a year. So a bit more than DS and nowhere near the two combined, BUT that’s still insane considering all Switch games are HD and many of them are the best in their series. Surprisingly the Wii U’s average output is similar to Wii’s, at 8 a year, with the 3DS’ only shrinking a little at around 10 a year.

You guys!! That was such a nostalgic episode looking back on the Switch. I cannot believe we are coming to the end of the lifecycle. Throughout the last 7 years so much has changed in my life, some positives, some sad things but my one constant has been having my Switch by my side. The joy it has brought to me with intense, memorable gaming sessions and the fun I had playing lots of multiplayer with friends is priceless. One memorable event was my friends organised a surprise online birthday party in Animal Crossing for me during lockdown. It was truly an amazing moment!! Thanks for the great episode as always. Time to get back to my Switch.

Son of a Cleveland Browns fan and family, Cleveland Browns fans are not ashamed of their team. If anything, they are blindly faithful to the Browns no matter how bad the team is doing.

My first experience with the Switch was in the summer of 2017 while I was in the UK for work. My colleague brought one along and we played in the hotel. Kickstand, joycons, and Mario Kart. So fast to set up, it just worked without any hassle, and most importantly it was fun, of course. I had entirely missed the Wii and Wii U eras, but I knew right then that Nintendo had knocked it out of the park this time.

Have either or both of you considered writing a book? You both have such a wealth of history and stories that it would be a marvelous book. I’d definitely buy it! :)

Folders and themes do not slow down a system. It was the network activity of Miiverse, etc. The irony is the WiiU shop worked better and had music. The Switch one is like living in the 90's on a modem.

I think that Nintendo investigated these new games leaking and being put on the internet for pirated downloads and found that Amazon and Wal Mart were the source of said leaks. So they have decided to not partner with them for their physical sales. That is what makes sense to me about this situation.

The new Joy-Con charger has a killer app. NES Controllers. I made one out of a charging grip a while back. Soon it will be in stores. Beats charging on them on the console.

I think the Nintendo Switch is a culmination of everything that has made Nintendo great through these years: Great games, all in one system and with the advantage of portability. The Switch having most of the Nintendo games ported onto it is no joke, it's an all in one package.

And I think the gimmick thing can be balance as "How much does the gimmick incumber every other game (That doesn't use it)?" For example, one of the issues for Wii was the lack of a proper gamepad and everyone relying on the Wiimote combo. The closest thing was the Classic Controller but even then it wasn't a guarantee per household and it didn't have buttons on the sticks. The Wii U suffered less of this, as the gamepad gimmick only had to show the game on screen but it did suffer from everything else Wii U.

The Switch gimmicks can easily be bypassed; Not all games need to use motion controls, IR Sensor, touchscreen, etc. The only issue for the switch being less powerful due the mobile nature of the hardware, but EVERY DEVELOPER wants a piece of the Switch gigantic's userbase, so they'll do anything to get there (Even if it's a bad performing port).

And considering that the developers don't have to make a completely unique version of the game like with the Wii, that helps a lot.

Plenty of stuff to like for the Switch, the only thing holding it back on 2024 it's the power of the hardware. While this is usually the nature of Nintendo consoles, this seems to be the only issue with the switch rather than having a lack of third party games, or internet infrastructure, or a more universal control for the system, or lack of sales, etc.

Great reasons for why the Switch is Nintendo's best console! I know when you've been living with it for so long its often hard to see the positives with something, but the Switch truly is something special that stands above the rest of the games industry!

I'll go one further: the Switch is the best video game of all time currently! The reasons you've given are all parts of the reason why I truly believe that, but the one most important to me is that the Switch has the greatest critical mass of "Best games of all time" of any console ever on it, and its not even close! The Switch has:
- Via Hamster's Arcade Archives line of titles and the work of many more incredible developers dedicated to games preservation, the Switch has the vast majority of upper echelon arcade releases! From the important historical ones (Nintendo arcade games are even included here like Sky Skipper) to cream of the crop like Cave's shmups!
- All of Nintendo's 10/10 NES games, the majority of the great Famicom games, and tons of third party 10/10s from Capcom, Konami, and more!
- Most of Nintendo's 10/10 SNES and Super Famicom games as well as a large amount of the best games from both those regions from major third parties like Square Enix, Atlus, and Capcom!
- A growing library of excellent Game Boy games including a ton of forgotten gems
- Almost every one of Nintendo's best N64 games, with most of Rare's historic offerings on the console, with more coming
- Consistent addition of GBA titles including most of Nintendo's very best!
- A selection of the very best GameCube and Wii titles being remade for the system
- All but 3 of the Wii U's best titles available on the system
- Thanks to M2, a large selection of the Sega Master System's and Genesis's very best titles
- The most iconic third party PlayStation masterpieces (Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid) with some historically significant hidden gems being available in English for the first time (moon: An RPG Remix Adventure)
- The greatest games available on the PS2 (Shin Megami Tensei series, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, etc) are on the Switch
- A majority of the best games of the modern era (Nier Automata, Persona 5, Doom, Witcher 3) ported wonderfully onto the console
- And to top it all off, the Switch's own original library including the best entries in their respective series, for both Nintendo, third parties, and indies! Both new IP and long forgotten IP have been given brand new life on the Switch with stellar entries, as well as remakes of important and interesting games brought to life beautifully!

There just simply isn't a console that has as much access to the most highest regarded games of all time than the Switch. Wii U and PS3 (backwards compatible model only) come close, but even then they only have access to less than 40% compared to the Switch

As somebody who finally found a 1.5 TB micro SD on sale. I have spent like 3 days just downloading my entire Switch library (and I have a lot of physical games but most of them have updates). It's my largest gaming library outside of Steam and possibly might always be depending on how future console launches go.

52:13 Labo! While shortsighted, it is very interesting showcase of what you can do with a Switch. Another magic “accessory” where all is well into place is Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.

A very nice take on the Switch summed up perfectly. It makes me wish I spent more time on Switch and the ironic thing is that the most notable events in my life have been since the same time it came out!

I have never been as obsessed with any other console as much as the Switch, and I've never had this many games for any other platform, not even Steam. About 150 games on Steam after about 20 years, but 200 on Switch in just 7 years. I have so many games to catch up on I don't know if I'll ever get to them all.

1:30:09 I didn’t know this was Famicon until it revealed. I was shocked but also excited about it. I already preordered it.
