Cathay is now technically a Chinese company bearing the B registration. It’s pretty natural CX would utilize the advantage of being able to use the airspace to stay competitive. Of course, if ever US or EU decides to sanction CX for that they may choose to stay away again, but it’s quite unlikely

A big reason why Cathay want to fly over Russian airspace is to have an advantage over Western airliners, as the flight will be quicker and because of the reduced fuel costs and reduced staff costs, the flight will be cheaper, which could give Cathay an advantage of an US airline

Airlines who are not banned from Russian airspace should fly through the airspace again if convenient. That includes airlines such as QANTAS and JAL. The people most inconvenienced are passengers and cabin crew who are just going by day.

It has been reported by the news media here in Hong Kong that Cathay avoided Russian airspace wasn’t due to pressure from the local government, but rather the fact that its majority shareholder, Swire Group, is UK based. But wouldn’t backtracking on such move put Swire in hot water with the UK government?

Cathay is not wrong about sanctions. Swire, which is a majority owner of Cathay, based out of Hong Kong, which is governed by China. China while not openly supporting Russia, does not support the US lead sanctions on Russia.

If the closest point is 3000 km from the front lines, solely from a safety perspective, it doesn’t concern me too much if one day I personally had to travel to New York.

You say that many airlines are against utilising russian airspace, but let's be honest here, if it were not for the sanctions, everyone would've just continued business as usual. They're not against it, they are simply told to do so by their own national governments

There might be an answer to this is that the Chinese deal with Russia covers Hong Kong which allows any Airlines based in People's Republic of China including special administrative regions Hong Kong and Macau to fly over Russian airspace from United States Europe and Canada. In return China Vans Russian owned airplanes that are not registered in the Russian Federation RA-xxxx

Does an airline pay anything for using airspace, in this case significant airspace. I am thinking of navigation services, etc.

Yes it will make Cathay more competitive by allowing them to reduce fares but the demand to travel to Hong Kong is still virtually non-existent. Flying over Russia means paying exorbitant fees to use their airspace for every single flight which negates almost all of their fuel savings. In addition, there is also the moral side to this because all of the revenue from overflight fees goes straight into Russia's war machine.

So Cathay is paying overflight fees to Russia? I read that as enabling or at least ignoring genocide. Hong Kong has a pretty bleak outlook anyway, and Cathay is no exception to that dire authoritarian future.

Erm....when I flew from VHHH to CYYZ, I didn't fly over Russia with Cathay?

Air India has been flying over Russia since the start of the invasion. Let the airlines fly over Russia just stay away from the region affected

Let's mention the elephant in the room: Qatar, Emirates, Turkish, airlines of India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam - none of them ever stopped to fly over Russia. Their countries have denied to join the sanctions war started by USA and all the puppets of Washington. So, their airlines aren't banned by Russian government. The flightpath of the restarting Hongkong-NewYork line by Cathay lies east of the lake Baikal, thousands kilometers away of the actual war area, more than 5 hours of flight away. Russian and other airlines fly all over the country except a 500-km-something-wide band of space surrounding the ukrainian border, and we've never seen any safety issues. Real question is - why has had Cathay stopped the trans-siberian flights at all? Is there something about being part of the british Swire group? Won't they be banned by Russia now, because of being owned by englishmen?

Fantastic news, but what about Singapore Airlines, Air India, and in some cases Qantas?
