What’s unsettling about this scene is that Debbie went to bed drunk after their little argument and Nolan stood in the kitchen and stared outside the window all night in pure silence and waited until morning for Debbie to wake up so he could talk to her

To break it took too long to conquer Earth for the Viltrum Empire. He took out the strongest group that would stand a chance of stopping him, but has kept on his hero persona. He did not count on falling in love and having a son, but he has been training said son(Mark) so he could conquer earth by Nolan’s side. Nolan just left too many variables in play, that’s why his plan all went pear-shaped.

This part hits different when you remember that Viltrumites live far longer than humans. To Debbie, that is a reasonable plea, but to Nolan, it's meaningless. From a human perspective she has a right to know the truth, but from a viltrumite (in this case, Nolan) perspective, she is unworthy of knowing the truth, as 20 years is essentially nothing for a viltrumite.

I honesty believe that he had truly forgotten his mission, had actually become the hero he pretended to be at the start, until Mark got his powers and those ideas, those feelings he had left behind all came flooding back
The marked change in Nolans behavior before and after the power reveal and its erratic nature is his love and duty to Viltrum as a soldier conflicting with his love and duty to Earth and his family as a father, its why he kills the guardians, but doesn’t take over immediately, and why the outfit is still there, its his familial duty calling for help, trying to remind him what he has here that he never had on Viltrum
Its also why he leaves both here at at the end, the father in him cannot accept what the soldier in him does to his family, be it probably want to silence debbie or nearly kill mark, so it tells him to leave to protect them
