Squidward had an amazing character arc. Going from a narcissistic mediocre clarinet player acting like he's above everyone else to a selfless hero willing to stand up for those he cares about.

Truly an inspiring character.

It is so in-character for Nolan to not be able to read Squidward's "No" as sarcastic, just as it is incredibly in-character for Squidward to still be whining even after being beaten to a bloody pulp.

Funnily enough, these characters are canonically only a few degrees off from actually fighting each other. Omni-Man is in Mortal Kombat, which has Scorpion and Sub-Zero, who are also in Injustice. Injustice has the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who are also in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, a game in which Squidward is also a playable fighter. It’s all coming together.
