How to Automate Data Entry with Smart Fill in Google Sheets

Smart Fill in Google Sheets is a new AI-powered feature that automatically detects patterns, generates formulas, and autocompletes columns. Google Sheets SmartFill automatically analyzes cells within a spreadsheet to assist you with data entry.

For example if you have a column of names and you'd like to get the first name of a person, you don't have to write a formula. You just need to type the result you want and Smart Fill will recognize what you want and autofill the column with First names. The great benefit of Smart Fill is that it provides you with the formula for this. This means your results will automatically update.
Shortcut key to apply the Smart Fill results in Sheets is Control + Shift + Y.

Excel has a similar feature called Flash Fill. In this video we'll find out what SmartFill can do and where are the differences to Excel's FlashFill.

When it comes to pulling the numbers off, you can use the apostrophe before the number so it treats it as text

Hello Leila! I haven’t tried that feature yet but it got me thinking. If the smart fill feature works to extract numbers when Google shows it but not when you do it, could it be just because they have headers and you don’t? ... I’ll check that tomorrow 👍🏻🤗
