Indeed. The Flying Tigers did not originate the sharkmouth. In 1940, one of the founding members of the Flying Tigers saw a Life magazine cover photo of an RAF P40 serving in North Africa bearing the image.
The Flying Tigers later adopted the look as their own.
It so happened the image fits nicely on the radiator cowling of the P40 😊

The enemy likely doesn't even see the shark mouth. It's on there for the enjoyment of the users. I am a former Sundowner (Navy VF-111), we had these shark mouths on F8's, F4's, and likely F14's (I was out by then).
