In the mid 2000s the A10 was in a fight over Afghanistan and it was not only shot full of holes but was hit by a missile that ripped off one engine and half the wing along with a BIG part of the tail and it still was able to fly out of danger and land in Pakistan safely.

One of my buddies went to flight school in the military, and after he got his wings, he got to fly A-6's and then A-10's. He says that the A-10 is the ultimate "badass plane."

The engineers at Fairchild Republic did a great jog on the A-10. If you were a young engineer working on the A-10 back in the early 80's, my hat is off to you for making such an amazing aircraft.

Favorite A10 story: setting up visitor tents for an airshow in Lafayette LA. Everyone left for the Baton Rouge shop, leaving me behind to enjoy the show and watch the gear. Microburst (tiny tornado) hits, knocking down 3 of the 5 big tents. Sky was black, dumping rain. I hear an engine roar, and after the sky cleared, I asked what that sound was. They said “the Warthog crew took it up to see where the storm was going”.

Hearing that sound for the 1st time in person is an event you will never forget.

In the mid-80's my ex and I were driving through Fort Hood after entering through the rear gate, as we were going though a cut in the hills, we heard that sound and I instantly thought something was wrong with our car, as I began checking for warning lights or steering issues we heard this roar overhead.

Since we were sill in that "cut" through the hills, all we saw was just a flash as a warthog passed directly overhead.

Prior to the sound of the cannon firing, we hadn't heard a single sound suggesting that any aircraft were in the area, and we had our windows down.

Common misconception. The A-10 Warthog is not a plane with a big gun. It's a big gun with wings.
