Wiping on polyurethane- 50/50 diluted

Finishing a mahogany table top with wipe-on poly. I make my own using Varathane polyurethane and cut it 50/50 with mineral spirits. This is an open air building so I deal with dust but it flashes really quick and is a great finish for when you don’t have a spray room.

All the other polyurethane application videos make it look like some kind of advanced science to do properly, but this video makes it look so simple!

Why is anybody surprised that wet poly is reflective?

An artisan with skills. Nice work. Thanks for sharing the 50/50 tip.

BTW... the cloth face mask provides no protection from solvent fumes. Looks like there is plenty of fresh air though.

I mixed this and used a brush. That first coat looked great. The wood grain popped but after I sanded with 220 lightly and added a 2nd coat, I got random dryspots?!?! How can I fix that? Do I need to start over?

Don't those products tell you to "wipe off the excess"? How can you tell whether it needs to be wiped off? How wet should it be after you wipe off?

Thank you! Question: for stair runners after the step you show in video. After 1st coat, sand again with 400 grit, clean and reapply additional coat? About 4 coats in all? Thanks again, my steps are looking great because of this video!

Could you please talk about where in the finishing process this was? How many coats were on before this? What do you do between each coat? Thanks!

Mine starts to dry immediately?! So I go back and then it looks not so good

I realize this is an old video. Just curious what grit sanding you ended on. I assume no staining, but natural wood.

Ive been putting diluted polyurethane on woodwork for years! Seals it really well, protects from knocks and you can either leave the slightly textured finish of the swolen woodgrain or sand and wax!

at what sanding grit did you varnish it?

It didn’t work for me. Ended up doing 3 coats and the wood just still looked dry and had to use straight polyurethane.

Once the poly dried, how did you get all the tiny bubbles out with losing the gloss?
