I'm at the end of week 5 with a new rescue dog. She's 1.5 years old and she looks like a Texas Heeler. Because she's so smart, it's been a breeze. I chose her after doing a zoom call with her and her shelter kennel keeper. When i saw the love she had for him... I told them I would pick her up the following day (a 7 hour round trip drive). Best thing I've ever done. My existing 8 yo dog had lost her 13 yo sister the month before, and the rescue dog had been found on the streets of New Mexico with HER sister. The sister got adopted first, so basically they had both just lost their sisters. They slept in the truck together all the way home from the shelter. I was a nervous wreck though (worried that there would be conflict while I was driving). Once home we all were exhausted and fell asleep on the couch together. When we woke up... we were a pack. From the first days they were together, people could not believe that they hadn't been raised together as puppies. Grace of God this adoption, for all 3 of us!

We are at the tail end of week 3 and so far no behavior issues have popped up in our rescue puppy (10mos). He has slowed down in his eating, he pretty much was chowing down at first. He also has started playing with the ball I got him that he didn’t show interest in the first week. From the get go he was very much a Velcro dog and loves to be right up with us rubbing on him.
I think I have been unusually blessed with him since he is very willing to learn and play with us (in short bouts and not so much with our other dog lol). Only took 2 weeks to get him from “I won’t go near the crate” to “you know what, I’m going to chill right here” though we are not yet leaving him in it while gone since he previously escaped from it

We just adopted 2 rescue dogs a few days ago, and the rescue also meaned this 3/3/3 idea. So far, we are past the first 3 days, and all is good :)

Very helpful information, thank you! I have had 2 rescue dogs in the past and this 3-3-3 rule is a good guideline. Although some dogs adjust faster or slower, like you said, depending on their personality and life experience. My Aussie was glued to me almost immediately, but over several months she went from anxiously glued to me to happily, calmly velcroed to me! LOL

I guess I got lucky . I was at the 3 month mark the first week. My rescue immediately was comfortable with us and company.

You're so right that it's not one size fits all, but more of a simplified timeline to help with understanding that things take time. It's been over 4months with Snoop and he's only now opening up and I think there's still a long way from here😄

I have a lab amish mill mom almost 5 years old. Today is 3 months I have had her. She still runs away from me . She will only approach me when I lay on the couch and lick my hand. She won’t eat if I am too near her or look at her. She loves my dog, that is a plus!!! My cat hasn’t come downstairs 😢
