Go practice or else you'll get a nail in your tire next ride.

This is how we learn in Europe. Put your right foot down or use the front brake at walking speeds and you are at risk failing the test.

As a short rider, it is sometimes inevitable to put the right foot down when coming to a stop, when the ground is sloping towards the left, and so the left foot can't reach the ground. That means practicing front brake only stops 😬 scary but unavoidable for shorties on tall bikes.

This is one of my favorite exercises I learned from this channel. Honestly. It was mentioned before— finishing the last few feet of breaking at a stop with only rear brake. Wow! First time, off the front brake there was a huge lurch before I got the rear brake fully pressed. I learned my rear-brake intuition was waaay off. Today, when I think to do it at a stop, it’s a great reality check.

Between your and McCrider's videos, I actively use solely the rear brake and downshift for a gradual stop. Another great video.

Passed my M class ride test last week. I purchased his book on Amazon. But this exercise was most important for me. I am a shorty with 29" inseam riding a Suzuki DR650. I barely tippy-toe on a stop/light. The tester wants to see the left leg on the ground and the right leg on the rear brake. Dragging both feet on the stop/light would have failed the test. This technique helped. Now I can confidently ride and stop in downtown traffic like a pro:)

That is almost exactly how I stop already, I go to first gear using but I let off the clutch in between gears for some added engine braking while simultaneously slowing with my front brake and switching to my rear brake just before making my stop so that my brake light stays on while I at the light. That sounded more complicated than it is.

Been doing this one for years once I discovered that it prevents the forks from pogoing. Great tip.

Such a great tip. Definitely going to do this next time out. Always looking to improve and you’re helping me so much. Greg, thank you for all you’re doing to make us more skilled and safer riders.

Another thing I really like about my Rebel DCT is that in automatic, your already in 1st at a stop without having to worry about holding the clutch.

Hey Greg, love your vids and learned a thing or two following your drills. Also our intructuctor from the driving school also made us very comfortable making emergency brakes as long as you squeeze the brakes. Anyway, now that fall is coming and the roads get wetter, colder and generally nastier, maybe it's a good time to make a series on braking and safe riding in wet weather conditions?

I always do the trick f9 mentioned where you tilt your head to the side you want you put your foot down on but this is nice too

Totally new here & I’m a new rider, I’m going to practice this! Stop signs/lights make me so so so so nervous — like accidentally pop baby wheelies when leaving kind of nervous — do you have any videos possibly on throttle control & how to practice getting that feel?

I finish my stopping with rear brake only as you mentioned some time ago. I'll definitely try this exercise.

I always use both brakes but I release the front brake a few feet before I stop, no front diving makes passenger happy. Thanks

As a new rider, I really appreciate this video. It gives me more confidence and helps me better understand how to ride better and keep myself safe. I don’t have an issue with stopping but with the advice of many experienced riders, you’re always learning. I’ve been told by an instructor that even 10 or 20 years in, he’s still learning new things!

I love this. I used it a bunch tonight riding around after work. I like it so much because now I have a set method for stopping.
