EU and other countries have been curbing Apple on USB and generic charger. It's only a matter of time before it comes to MagSafe. I think this is also a factor.

I think Qi was going to add magnets already and Apple stepped in to make sure those other accessories would be compatible with MagSafe. Offering patent licensing sweetens the deal

I swear the only reason they’re doing this is because they’ll remove the charging port and since every other company has the chance to use MagSafe they’ll jump on the wagon too

You forgot reason #3: Money.

They just got burned by the EU, India and I think there was a third country standard to use USB-C. Only after this did they decide to propose this idea to Qi. If they can contribute to and set the next standard and make that the standard, then they don't have to spend money to change their devices to a new standard.

Removing the port is a terrible idea imo. On top of being wildly inefficient when it comes to charging, it's also superbly inconvenient

I got a magsafe case for my s21 ultra with chargers for my bedroom and car, and I can definitely see the attraction... The rubber port protector hasn't come out often since.

Removing the headphone jack was dumb, but removing the charging port is a whole other level of dumb.

The thing is.. i never really used wireless charging. It was too slow for my taste, if i picked up my phone it stopped charging, phone got hot... good ol' wired fast charging is fine for me.

Also i charge my phone while i sleep and have a full battery in the morning that usually lasts me until the next night.

I see why they added MagSafe to AirPods. It’ll be their selling point for when they introduce reverse wireless. They’ll figure it out with the Apple Watch too.

I moved my wife and I to MagSafe via Christmas gifts. The modularity you get from MagSafe accessories is really nice. We use pop-sockets and switch between them all the time. The option of having a pop socket and removing it to put the phone on a MagSafe charger is a real nice to have.

I've got a Peak Design case for exactly this reason. I love having magsafe on my android and it will be great when it's more universal
