It was probably the happiest episode in the whole franchise, everyone had a honest smile there, especially Asuka

The best part of this is 1:23, where we can see NERV’s staff smiling. They all look so happy and proud of Shinji and Asuka, and it’s just so heartwarming to see.

Honestly the thing I find most hilarious is how the Evas have traditional corded telephones included in them.

Nothing gives me more happiness than the expressions of joy on the character's faces at 1:20. It's one of the few times they all feel happy.

Asuka is so powerful her slap at 2:26 hurt Shinji despite being a hologram.

So Evangelion is normal when Gendo's not in it

everyone talks about how this scene and makes connections to the end of the series and the reflect with the hindsight of knowing the outcome of the show, but nobody is talking about how they made a 62 second original song to be used once, and its one of the most incredible composed songs i have ever heard. this scene is so much more than the narrative implications of whats to come. the theme of the episode was about being in sync and for a fight scene they created a track that perfectly syncs to the characters feelings and actions on screen. they not only made an original song for one scene but they made a music video. this scene is like a celebration of what you can achieve creatively when you use every strength and limitation about your chosen medium. i dont have the credentials to impose importance, or label something as high or fine art, but this show, and this scene specifically, really is a lesson in storytelling.

Honestly, this feels like the only truly victorious scene in the whole anime. It remains untainted by the sorrow and pain that hangs over the rest of the show. With the usually gloom and loneliness that would hang over the end of the scene replaced by cheerful, almost comical banter.
It's the perfect symbolization of the show's theme of loneliness, as once Asuka and Shinji break down the walls between them, and accept each other, they can actually go on to do great things, unbound by the limits their loneliness and self-doubt placed on them. It's a shame this feeling couldn't continue through the rest of the anime however, and Shinji's and Asuka's flaws slowly drag them back to their sad, lonely, broken selves.

Can we just acknowledge how fricking BEAUTIFUL it is that there's multi-audio? I can listen to the original Japanese dub or the English dub if I like! Thanks for this!

I love how a normal fun mecha battle which would be good but ultimately ignored in every other robot show is perceived as special and incredibly optimistic in Evangelion.

The direction here is pristine. You don't need shaky cam and flashy effects to make a great action sequence. They even held freeze frames for many seconds in the comedic part and it works perfectly.

Makes you wonder how unstoppable shinji and asuka could have been if the story turned out different

a little sad that this fight wasnt included in the rebuilds

I am so disappointed this wasn't in Rebuild. It is such a great character moment for Asuka and Shinji and they are for once together as they deserve to be. In those giant biomachines and far apart, but still so close at heart. It was a moment of rare joy in Evangelion and yeah, they are screaming at each other in the end, but in a loving way, kinda admitting how they care for each other in the only way they can and everyone knows it. There is also a sense of how much pressure was actually just lifted from then. Definitely among my favorite moments.
