How I Dealt with Anaphylaxis

A simple allergic reaction affects one body system, for example hives being present on someone's skin. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that affects two or more body systems for example wheezing with hives and nausea and vomiting.

I share with you one anaphylaxis call that really shaped my practice dealing with anaphylaxis patients. Epinephrine, Benadryl, Albuterol, Zofran are common EMS medications that are used to treat anaphylaxis.

I hope sharing this call with you makes you a better EMS provider.

Be Great,

Evan, The Paramedic Coach®

I'm an EMT student from Ireland and just seen the exact same scenario in class this weekend it's a really important lesson! Thanks so much for all the videos! Been learning a lot from you!

As a nurse, clinically been there paramedic. I like your assessment, but do see point of your preceptor. The positive outcome justifies your interventions. Middle area risk was mitigated by epi IV. Any anaphylactic shock surprise was reduced. We think the same, let's not set up for clinical surprise. Patient arrived at ED with patent airway and survived. Strong work.

In my State, National Guard Soldiers went through a 1month program to get their EMT-Basic license. (That's right...ONE MONTH, to read an entire 1, 500 page text book, pass the course, pass the State practical, and pass the State written exam). Quite a few failed, but...I passed the course, the practicals, and got a 91% on the State exam. I even went back to help tutor the Soldiers that failed so they can get their EMT license. Your videos have made me consider changing jobs and go into the medical field. Thank you for your videos!

I've been watching your videos since I started going to EMT school. I've now been a nationally registered EMT for 5 months and I find myself constantly coming back for tips and always learning something new. Thank you so much!

I'm one week away from completing my EMT class and just before this video came out my husband had a allergic reaction so I gave him Benadryl first then the hives started to go away. I was so prepared if he did go into shock. Was a bit scary, he had that type of shock before but never really knew why before but I do now I do. I am happy that I am going through this because it is helping me better understand so much that I went through and any of my family members that have medical issues.

Not sure if you will see this it’s an old video, but my sons face swelled severely due to a food allergy, when the paramedics came they didn’t give epi even though his nose was stuffy and he sneezed a few times but otherwise o2 was good and his tongue throat wasn’t really swollen but mildly itchy. The ER gave him steroids and Benadryl for a few hrs then released but did give an rx for an epi pen. She taught us 2 or more systems. I was confused so he did get stuffy and sneeze a few times on top of really swollen eyes and mildly swollen lips. Wonder to this day if he should’ve gotten epi in case…..

Wait, so what was the 3rd level? At 3:20, you say there are 3 levels but only mention 2. What's the 3rd one?
