Synopsis:
0:00 Northern Ireland
During her time in Northern Ireland, Penelope visits one of the lesser known royal residencies; Hillsborough Castle. Despite the difference of opinions held about the Queen in this part of the UK, the staff here ensure the same scrupulous attention as any other of The Queen’s palaces; raising the flag, buffing the brass and turning down the beds for any royal visit.
Here Penelope flicks through a long lost scrap book of royal menus to reveal some of Her Majesty’s favourite foods. She also meets the Queen’s bugler; an appointment which datesback to a royal warrant of 1660. Beyond the castle, Penelope uncovers some unexpected treasures from The Queen’s 1953 Coronation Tour.
45:54 Wales
In Wales Penelope explores the regal links of the Pembrokeshire corgis and the Royal harpist. At Caernarfon Castle, where Prince Charles was invested as Prince of Wales in 1969, she relives the first royal coronation ever to be broadcast in colour. She is serenaded by the male voice choir of Anglesey and Bangor.
As a corgi owner herself, Penelope is thrilled to meet the champion Welsh dog breeder who has supplied the Queen with some of her most loyal subjects – her pet corgis. She rounds off the tour by meeting a survivor of the Aberfan coal mining disaster in 1966, reflecting on the importance of the Queen in visiting and supporting this community throughout her reign.
