Laparoscopic, or keyhole, colon resection is a common surgical procedure throughout the world. It appears
to be associated with less pain and a faster recovery than a conventional open surgical approach. A closer look
reveals that the advantages may not be quite as marked as previously thought. The insights that have arisen from
the laparoscopic surgical experience, however, have led to new understandings of how pain arises following
abdominal surgery with major implications for new approaches to pain management in the future.
