Are fixed or variable ND filters better? I compare some differences between the two types of filters in this video. Especially for those looking to invest money in their first ND filters, hopefully this video would be able to help you in your decision on which one to buy. I also explain the potential drawbacks of variable ND filters including polarization effects and cross patterns.

Thanks for clarifying the pros and cons of both, and clarifying that the variable one works with two polarising lenses and the negative effects it can have.

I just placed an order on TY using your discount code for a variable ND. Absolutely necessary when I am shooting videos with the EFM 32mm 1.4 want to retain the DOF as I move indoors and outdoors.

Thank you ZY Cheng. This is the best, to the point video I've found that sums up hours of talk that I've had to go through.

That's how a concise informative video should look like 👍🏻

Anyway, you need to do a follow up video adding magnetic pop-in filters. Those look like nice middle ground between fixed and variable worlds.

This clarified a lot of things for me. Thank you! I am gonna be using fixed ND filters, but magnetic, for easily interchange.

Thanks for such a fantastic, to-the-point video!
I've watched multiple videos regarding ND filters, none of them delivered all these points!

Thanks for a great summary of the differences! Other comparison videos and blog pages haven't been able to tie it all into one story. Thank you for doing this :)

Thanks. I think I will get a fixed one with about 2 stops to preserve quality. I'm doing family portraits, sometimes outside in full sun.
At f1.4 1/4000th sec is over exposed.

Thank you for this video! I guess I fall into run and gun group of photographers. Now time to choose the best one...

Thanks for this very helpful video. I will not be buying a variable filter due to those colour cast changes and cross-effect. I'd rather spend a little more time and money on quality separate filters.

l use a fixed 10 stop slim ND with the Xume magnetic filter holder. Pop it off, compose, focus, pop it on, and shoot.

Thanks for the concise info.
You covered the pros and cons very well!
So... does a variable ND behave like a polarising ND filter?
