Its interesting to see people talking about costs in japan recently because of the recent inflation elsewhere. In particular how cheap the JPY is compared to USD at the moment. For example JYP was roughly 75-80 to 1 USD the first time I visited in 2010 - 2011. Now it's almost double that at 138 JPY to 1 USD.

My rent in NYC today is $2, 200 USD for a 2 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. Hearing $500/month rent in Tokyo had my jaw hit the floor...

Takashi I'm so happy to see you covering this big issue, rents here in Lisbon, Portugal are skyrocketing a 2 bedroom apartment costs 12 to 1500€, eating out is about 14-20€ per person and groceries is about 20€ for 1 meal, it's mad and I'm shocked to see that Tokyo is so cheap compared to Lisbon. I really want to come to Japan and experience it myself

When I visited Tokyo 4 years ago I found eating out was really inexpensive. Food in general such as bentos and snacks from the grocery store or convenience store was reasonable and good quality. Transportation I thought was expensive but worth it because the trains are clean and always on time. Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to hear other peoples thoughts.

Takashi-San I think if you do a follow up you should ask the lovely people you interview how big their apartments are. A lot of those interviewed are in dorms or subsidized housing. Many people might not know how small Japanese apartments can be. Love the channel!

Long-term foreign resident in rural Japan here. I was interested to watch this video to see how prices in Tokyo compare with where I live in Mie prefecture. Interestingly, restaurant prices don’t sound much different than where I live. Rent is a little cheaper here…but not by much, at least if you live in an apartment. On the other hand, you don’t mind living in an old house that’s far away from a train station, you can get a decent sized place for 200$ (US) or less per month. As for locally grown vegetables or (sometimes) fruit, it’s super cheap here. The last point is about clothes. One interviewee mentioned a lack of ‘fast fashion’ here…which is funny to me because everyone I know here buys most of their clothes at Uniqlo and GU (cheap and cheaper)… department stores aren’t really a thing anymore! Maybe Mie people are just cheap..? 😆
