In this Piatto™, video recipe, we'll learn how to roast chestnuts in an oven at home! Learning how to cook chestnuts at home is a great way to enjoy this autumn treat. It's also the perfect addition to an Italian Christmas dinner. If you've ever wondered why they sing so passionately about roasting chestnuts on an open fire, you'll understand after tasting these beauties!

Our roasted chestnuts were prepared in a Bosch oven on the 'static' setting.

YOU'LL LEARN HOW TO...
Choose chestnuts (What are the characteristics of a healthy chestnut? How do you tell a bad chestnut from a good one?)

Prepare chestnuts for roasting (How to peel chestnuts easily by using simple kitchen scissors to score them -- here @Victorinox scissors!)

Cook chestnuts by pre-soaking them to make peeling chestnuts easy.

Roasting chestnuts in in an oven at home to perfection. Bake the chestnuts at 350° F/ 175° C for 20 minutes. Then, bake chestnuts at 425° F / 220° C for 10-15 or until done.

I rarely write comments or reviews, but I had to review this video. I love chestnuts and I have always struggled with peeling them no matter how I scored them. Last night, I tried this method and the chestnuts came out perfect and easy to peel!!! I was hesitant about trying this method because I didn’t like the idea of having to plan ahead so I have two hours to soak the chestnuts, but now, this will be the only way I make chestnuts from now on. Thank you!!!

I followed the directions with no compromise and guess what??? The best chestnuts that I've had in over 50 years. I just want you to know that I have never been without chestnuts at Christmas time since I was a kid. These simple easy to follow directions, will produce wonderful results! Perfection! For years I've been frustrated by peeling chestnuts after baking. Now I know why. I only scored them, as recommended, on one side. You showed a much deeper cut all the way around. That's key. After scoring using your method, peeling was a breeze.

I grew up in the 50s and my Dad would buy chestnuts every autumn to roast in the oven. I can remember him piecing them before placing in the oven. He was from Bradford Yorkshire and loved roasted chestnuts. He was the only one in the family that seemed to like them. That was so long ago, I don’t remember what they tasted like

It took me 2 hours to clean my oven thoroughly when I cooked chestnuts in oven. It exploded with massive mess. Now I learn! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You’re awesome!

This looks like a nice method. I am a bit impatient and like to cook 6 or so for myself quickly. I keep them cold in the fridge, pick out 6, and poke them in 4 places with the tip of a knife. I like your scissor trick. The wide flat ones get poked in 6 places so they don't explode. I have a stainless steel basket and cook them right on the open flame on the gas stove, turning them frequently until the shells get black, smoke, and split open. This works on the coils of an electric stove as well with the chestnuts directly on the coils. Just turn them frequently.

When the shells burn, they add a nice smoky flavor to the nut meat. The smoke also adds to the aroma of the house on a cold rainy night. This method of cooking makes great flavorful chestnuts in 5 minutes. There is no soaking or damp cloth necessary. Going from fridge to fire makes the paper inside the shell separate easily from the meat.

I save the shells and burn a few in the basket on the stove before friends come over. Its an alternative to a walnut wood fire which also smells delightful.

Growing up, my mother would roast chestnuts, but they were very difficult to peel. Towards the end, our fingers would be so sore! She scored the chestnuts and put a damp towel over them after they came out of the oven, but missed that crucial step of soaking them for prior to cooking. Thank you! Great upload. 🙏🏻💛🌰

I’ve messed up chestnut roasting so many times, I’ve given up until this video. Never knew about the soaking and covering with a wet cloth. Those might just be the important missing steps so I will definitely get some chestnuts tomorrow. 😋
