IGN News - 2013 Wii U Sales Look Dismal

Wii U sales hit a low in January and February this year, according to the latest NPD data.

Nintendo's console sold just 57,000 units in January, managing to up that number to 64,000 in February. This is worse than any recorded week for the current-generation consoles (Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3). The Xbox was top of the hardware chart with 302,000.

i have used one yes, but you dont even have to use one to know just the specs alone are barely enough to keep up with last gen consoles which came out 8 years ago.

One problem with the Wii U is that Nintendo haven't exactly advertised it very well. I asked a bunch of people at my school if they knew anything about it, and hardly any of them even knew it existed....

pikmin comes out in may, im sure when the later games such as that wonderful 101 and bayonetta sales will really pick up

I like wii u, but low sales are disturbing, this is worldwide, here in the uk, we still have not got scribblenauts for wii u, its february date has been postponed, and because of region lockout, import games wont work.

Where are you getting this number? Wii U is $350 for the deluxe set. $429 is the estimated price for the basic PS4 model coming out late this year.

I think the biggest problem is that there are no 'must have' games for the console yet. It's the main reason why I haven't purchased the console as of now.

incase u havent notices. Wii sold over 100mil units worldwide. Not to mention all the 1st party titles like New Super Mario Bros Wii. which alone sold 28mil copies. More than a whole series of games like Gears of War and Uncharted.

We also have to keep in mind that even when the architecture is similar it does not necessarily mean it's easy to emulate. The original Xbox as far as I'm aware doesn't even have a decent emulator, and that thing ran on a Pentium III and an nVidia GeForce 3 series GPU.

NPD statement said it was up 40% over the January sales which would put it in the 80k range...

that video was months ago, only a month or so after the vita came out. just like they put out a similar video about the 3ds pretty shortly after it came out.

so for some crazy reason the sales are going to spike? only way that will happen is with a price cut and they can only do that so many times. because from the looks of it i dont think the life time sales will be too impressive either.

@NickDonley Specs doesn't sell a game console, the games on the console does, the VITA has better specs than the 3DS and yet the 3DS has sold more than the VITA.

You could say that also. Vita and 3DS both had a rough start. 3DS came out of that slump after the price cut 6 months later. Vita looks like its starting to pick itself up at least in Japan.

Thats true, HOWEVER when something is announced even with all these stuff I have said, a game is never announced untill its on store shelves. So even if its announced and I see devs tweeting about it, its still just data untill its sellable.

That last sentence is aimed at the fact that newer consoles won't be doing graphics that are a leap over what the current gen is doing. We've hit a virtual ceiling. The best thing the PS4 has going for it is they can do those mind blowing visuals easier. The Wii U is also capable of the visuals the consumers expect.
