115 Killed, Protesters Free 850 Prisoners As Bangladesh Deploys Army To Contain Job Quota Protests

Spiralling tensions in Bangladesh saw further violence after police allegedly fired live rounds at protesters in Dhaka on July 20. Soldiers were seen patrolling Bangladeshi cities on July 20 to quell growing civil unrest sparked by student demonstrations. Reports claimed the country's riot police fired at protesters who defied the curfew imposed by PM Sheikh Hasina’s government on July 19. The ongoing violence in Bangladesh has killed at least 115 people so far, according to an AFP count of victims reported by police and hospitals. At least 300 Bangladeshi police officers were reportedly injured during the July 19 clashes with protesters at multiple locations in Dhaka, as per the police. Meanwhile, Protesters in the Bangladeshi district of Narsingdi stormed a jail on July 19 and freed over 850 inmates before setting fire to the facility, Reuters reported.
