Homeskoolin’ Volume 151, Tom Bukovac, “Dog After Surgery”

A brief look at slide guitar from a delirious man who just woke up.

As you can tell, i didn't even bother to tune this instrument before playing, I actually enjoy exercising the subconscious brain adjustments that need to be made whilst playing an out of tune guitar to make it sound "relatively" in tune.

in fact, one of my favorite "party tricks" has always been to play a totally out of tune at some sort of musical "get together" for 10-15 minutes without anyone noticing it's THAT out if tune, and then witness the look of horror on the face of the next person i hand it to when they play the first chord on it.

do NOT forget to send in your postcard to win a free Duesenberg Session Man guitar

Thank you guys so much for the kind donations regarding the "anti-obnoxious thumbnail" crusade i am on....i TRULY believe that i have there coolest following of people of any free guitar lesson channel on Youtube....any group of people that can endure the constant Genesis battering that you guys have is cool in my book.

As a guitarist, I wonder what non-players are thinking when they watch it? I know that I am just amazed at how hard it is to do what Tom is doing and yet he makes it looks so easy. Really. I just am amazed at the gift God has given you and how you have crafted it.

I love it when you say "that's frigging hard" while making it look so easy. I'm not a very good slide player, but this edition of the Uncle Larry show makes me want to practice.

Ha! Uncle Larry, you must have been standing in the wings of my gigs. For sure, the nights i think i stink, people say great, and just the reverse. All i know to do is just do my best every night and let it be what it will be. And thanks for the great advise on playing slide. I admit to taking the easy way out, i play lapsteel when i need some of that vibe. Seems i always have work to do. Thanks for everything.

Hey Tom, first I want to tell you I think this channel you’ve put together has grown into a community and people come to support you and see how and what you’re doing, everything you put out for people to learn and develop their skills as guitar players is fantastic and appreciated. I hope the next VCB you do you read this to everyone because this is now directed to everyone watching: I know everyone watching knows the value of what our dear Uncle Larry has done and continues to do, how many people of his caliber does what he does? So let’s show a little support, I challenge everyone to put into the jar, for those who have won’t mind this challenge but those who don’t let’s see it happen, if everyone throws in a buck who watches just this one video I think collectively we can all support all the time and effort and thoughtfulness he puts into all he does for us. That’s all I got to say.

Loved it when Clapton said in his book when he comes off stage and people say “you killed it tonight”. He thinks how the F would you know?!

I am one of those crippled dogs! I usually just pick up the slide for solos, as I play exclusively in standard tuning. But, you are right, as always, I need to start forcing myself to play regularly, with the slide on. Thanks, Tom. The other things you mention, playing against open strings, playing chords perpendicular to the frets, I am already doing. Ongoing work! We love The Starship Trooper!

Mood . . . goes right along with the blistering heat. That slide takes the edge right off. Incredible stuff Tom!

A little South Saturn Delta... You totally nailed the different subjective experiences that band members can have from the same gig. And the crowd reaction (or lack thereof). Hendrix once said that "compliments are so embarrassing sometimes" for that very reason.
