How to Spot Canine Focal Seizure Symptoms

I am posting this video for educational purposes. Pumpkin, the German Shorthaired Pointer dog, had clusters of focal seizures (formerly called partial seizures). Neurologist said it was likely to be a symptom of a tumour or cancer in the brain. She deteriorated quickly over a short span of 3 weeks. My wish is for this video will help others figure out what is happening to their dog.

Please post your questions in the Comments below and I will answer to the best of my ability. Please note though I am not a doctor and have no professional medical experience. I am answering based on the experience I had with Pumpkin.

Thank you for watching! Please give a Like if you enjoyed this video.

I can't thank you enough for posting this video. It is sad but very helpful to hear that other people have had a similar experience. We have a GSP and have had the same thing occurring for the last month. Vet says its most likely a brain tumor. She is having them everyday now and she is declining quickly. I can't believe how fast this has happened. We have decided to put her down next week as her quality of life has declined.

Thank you for posting this. This seems to be what is happening to my Cavalier. When we see his vet tomorrow, I can now tell her that I have seen the same thing on Lily’s video.

My 11 year old boxer, Laila is experiencing this exact thing. I'm laying here in tears because I noticed something happening to her over the last couple of months. Last night and today got very scary and in speaking with her vet, PTS is the answer. Going in tomorrow morning at 7:30 and I'm in tears over this. But I don't want my baby to deteriorate more or suffer a worse seizure. Thank you for this post and video. I think I was searching for reassurance that I was doing the right thing for my dear furrbaby, and you provided a step to closure.

My dog started having seizures about 6 months ago. At first I thought I imagined her symptoms, but after the first seizure she had another one a couple of months later. I took her off her monthly heartworm medication, I changed all of my cleaning supplies, but most importantly I got her good quality CBD suspended in MCT oil. MCT fats are the basic ingredients of the dog food designed for dogs with seizures. Since my dog got on this regime she has a seizure about once a month. She went from having grand mal seizures to focal seizures with this treatment regime, and she is having them less often.

I am currently trying to sell my house, after I do I want her to get a full neurological workup . It isn't an emergency situation because she is the prime age of a dog with idiopathic epilepsy and she is having seizures so far apart, and she is otherwise a picture of health and vitality. They wouldn't put her on medication with the current frequency and severity of her symptoms anyways.

Thanks for the video. My dog just had a seizure like this. Usually he can't move or look at me so this one was different. He was also growling at us and was just acting unusual. He has seizures every once in a while but not close together. I'm hoping it doesn't get worse. So sorry about your dog. 🐾

Thank you for your post! I have looked at many videos to see exactly and similiarity what my dog has. My dog's upcoming appointment to the neurologist is this monday. Also I hope your dog is doing okay <3

Such a sweet kitty aweee.
Pretty sure my epileptic dog has both this and generalized seizures . It started a couple years ago, where he would have a little episodes like this, or he would stare off into space and his head would kind of twitch. Every once in a while he has a big one.
I see that it’s been a couple years I’m hoping your adorable dog is doing well. Sure is a pretty pup

Thank you for posting this. My dog was also undergoing something I thought was a cluster seizure since she was conscious during. I can mark this off of the list of what she potentially has but...

My dog has been doing this. She is my only love in the world. The past 2 days she has frozen and retracted a paw. And looks in my eyes.

And she’s my neurological alert dog.

I’m bawling

My dog had very similar symptoms. Afters years I discovered it was gas stuck in her. At first i just used antacid and that litterly cured the issue. After trials of foods I found one that didn't cause gas and she hasn't had issues in over 10 years now. The only time we every have issue in-between is when someone gives her human food. Big no no.

My dog is doing something like this for almost his entire life he is 10.5 years old and have these symptoms about 5-6 times a year. We found out that when we make him run he quickly becomes normal as if the blood rushing makes it better. The intensity is same through out all these years and doctors said it normal 5 years ago idk. I will address this video as a source of this as neither i had a clear explanation nor do doctor understood. I hope your dog is doing well, btw my dog is my profile image.

Hello Lily! Thank you for sharing this video. I have a 1 year old pug and i’ve noticed unusual behaviors twice now. They were more or less a week a part. His symptoms mirrors the symptoms of your dog. He begins to sway side to side, almost as though he is trying to regain his balance. It’s subtle, he doesn’t fall over or anything like that. He also becomes euphoric, running around only to stop suddenly and shake again. Another behavior i’ve noticed is that he will stop and stay frozen in place, almost as though he is trying to process what is happening. I would like to know what you do when your dog experiences this, and if you ever went to the vet to get some answers. Thank you so much!

Thank you for posting this. We have a 14 year old beagle mix who has been getting lumps the past year and just started doing the exact same thing a week ago. Sometimes it is like she is not with it and if I were to clap my hands it would snap her out of it, but the last night she fell down because of it.
We are terrified of what the progression may be, she is happy, eating and going on walks otherwise. I have a vet appointment but assume they won't do much with an old dog.

Hello Lily thank you for posting this video. For almost two years I’ve noticed my dog wrecks having similar issues. He will be three in August. I wanted to ask you did you ever notice your baby dripping urine uncontrollably? I want to say that these episodes happen about 4-5 times a year. When it does happen it seems as if wrecks were drunk and he will bark at nothing it’s really weird. It used to scare me when It started happening to him but as time went buy i started to realize that he will get better as long as he gets some rest it’s usually gone by the next morning. You have no idea how many times i went to the urgent care paying almost 1000$ each time for them to just tell me that there is nothing wrong with him. And it honestly frustrates me. I hope your baby is doing fine. God bless

Can you tell me what happened over the last 3 weeks in the decline? My dog is having focal point seizures, mostly at night. About every couple of hours and lasts about 30 seca to a minute. They went a head and put him on meds. Why did they think your dog had a tumor? Any info is greatly appreciated. This has come on suddenly and I am at a loss.

This recently happened after I gave my dog his flea prevention. I’m not even sure what to do and I’m scared to even give it to him again.
