Belgian Malinois German Shepherd Mix: The Ultimate Working Dog

What sets this hybrid dog breed apart is that the Belgian Malinois and the German Shepherd are arguably the two top protection K-9s in the world.
These breeds also share similar origin stories as working livestock herding and guarding dogs.
More recently, Belgian Malinois became one of the first dog breeds to work with the police, while German Shepherds first rose to prominence while serving in the German Army, and later in the American police and military forces.
In terms of temperament and personality, this should be fairly predictable in these dogs since the two parent breeds share similar backgrounds.
Some owners describe the Belgian Malinois like a "German Shepherd on steroids", giving us a great idea of how active, energetic, and intense a Belgian Malinois can be.
So we can safely assume that the German Malinois will be just as, if not more, high energy than the parent dogs.
Both parent dogs are intensely people-focused, have high prey drives, chase instincts, and won't like being left alone too frequently.
In terms of coat type and shedding pattern, both parent breeds have medium-length double layer coats that shed heavily year-round and seasonally.
Regular brushing is definitely recommended to reduce shedding and the amount of fur around your house, but other than that, their grooming requirements aren’t too demanding.
On average, a German Malinois will weigh around 65 pounds and stand 24 inches tall.
Although they’re not overly large dogs, the most challenging aspect of owning a Belgian Malinois German Shepherd mix will be training, and providing enough daily exercise.
These dogs are highly intelligent, and very keen to have some kind of job or activity to do.
Given their unique mix of traits and powerful size, starting puppy socialization and training right away - ideally from your first day at home together will be very important.
Although mixed breed dogs are generally healthier, Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd breed lines both have some serious genetic health issues.
The mixed breed dog will therefore still be at risk of developing hip dysplasia, eye and cardiac issues, autoimmune thyroiditis, and Degenerative myelopathy.
Despite this, these dogs will still live for about 14 years on average, and should make great family companions overall.
With that being said, you’ll still need to be cautious if you have young kids. The GSD Malinois’ herding instincts may cause them to nip at the heels of younger kids, and their prey instincts may make them want to chase other family pets or even little kids.

We love our Girl so so much. Thought we were getting a full Mali, so so glad we got the Mix we got. She has the best of both and is a powerhouse when working with me. You may never get the dog you want, but you will always get the dog you need.... She is fantastic with the kids, loves her pool time. She does however require more walking, so running, jumping and chasing, than any dog I have ever seen or been around. I'm a huge dog person, met many dogs, these dogs have the focus and drive than either parent dog. 10months in and still being blown away by her abilities and character each day

I have a rescue GSDxBelgian Malinois mix, Shepinois, as they're called here where I live, called Narla. She is so gentle with kids and very affectionate.
But on the other hand she can be like a bull in a China shop sometimes, especially when playing with her husky sister 😂 She was an absolute nightmare on heat also. Never knew a dog could scale a 6ft so easily when its's craving the "D". I got her when she was 18 months and she was very wild at first she'd had no training. She's 4 now and she's grown in to being the best family dog you could wish for and no longer escapes 😂 🐕 ❤

I thought I was getting a GSD and found out later she was a Malinois mix. She's definitely a high energy crack head, but she's also very sweet. She plays with my cat just fine and in six months of having her has only chewed the corner of a night stand. She's at home alone for around 4-5 hours while I'm working and so far been a good girl. I thought my old husky had energy, damn was I wrong.

Just got a 8 weeks old female Melanois x and boy is she a good girl. I expected her to cry the first night I brought her home but she remained quiet through the night and woke me up at 5am. She learns tricks quite rapidly but as of now she has some serious biting needs. Loves to be around people and always ready for belly rubs. Honestly, I don't recommend it for most people but if you know what you're getting into and learn how to train them, they're the best. Bonus point: she is also very gentle around kids.

If you are energetic she'll match that.

If you like to calm she'll match that too.

I've had both and the GSD/Mal mix being the best of both. I work them in protection and my mix has the athletic ability of the Mal with the intelligence and bite(GSD's bite a lot harder) of the GSD.

This is the best mix . And thats hard for me to say because i love love german shepherds. Mine are very protective and very smart . And very good with kids of all sizes ! My female seats and protec my friends 2 year old . So dose the male but he always moveing when out side .

I'm getting a 1 month old gsd malinois mix because the owner is going to sell them before they stop weaning, so I thought that it was best if I could save at least one just in case they don't end up in a family that knows how to take care of small puppies that are still weaning. Can't wait to take him home but I can't help it, my heart breaks for those small puppies. Every dog needs a loving home.
