Short answer: because aliens use the ocean to park their UFOs in their underground bases

I'm a space enthusiast too, but I agree. Who knows what might be down there. Cures, treatments, and etc. I loved the movie "The Abyss".

The real question is why haven't we found bikini bottom?

Well, we can't go too deep underwater because of the pressure. Without a hard-suit or being inside a submarine, we can only handle about 3 to 5 bars, that's 3 to 5 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level. Also, when you experience such pressures, you can't come back up too quickly as decompression sickness is sure to set in if you do. This means a maximum depth of 40 meters.

Yeah the only thing you failed to mention and hint at is that while exploring the sea will be more beneficial than space in the short term, it cannot compare to the long term benefits that space can provide.

It's the present nature of many humans to look outward for answers instead of inwards, and the obsession with space exploration over ocean exploration seems to mirror that. Many are conditioned that what's inside is ugly, fearful, and needs to remain hidden, and must be covered up with an "acceptable" exterior. This is also evident in people searching outside themselves for answers, e.g. all addictions and unproductive attention sucking activities. Also, I think space exploration over ocean exploration illustrates a bigger issue, in that we like to escape our problems instead of dealing with them. More ocean exploration would necessitate us to learn to respect the ocean and its power in order to explore and understand it. Some of us seemingly rather marvel at our own "power" of space exploration and all the things we had to build to do it as some kind of pinnacle of human existence. Building machines doesn't make you more human, just makes you a machine building human. Trillions of dollars spent globally on building machines for space exploration and weapons while people on this planet starve, die of thirst, and have no homes. Funny, isn't it?

Both outer space and underwater exploration are hard. Space has a number of advantages though.
1. We can see things easily. Telescopes and other detectors of other energies can show us a lot without leaving land.
2. Money can be made there. Low Earth orbit is being exploited to the tune of billions of dollars yearly.
3. The Space Race made space sexy. Although that has died back since we left the Moon, it seems to be revving back up. Exploring the oceans just isn't that sexy.
4. Private industry is getting into the act, and people think that is a good thing. Underwater is being exploited by the oil companies and most people think that is bad.

5. NASA has made a big deal about all the technological advancements space exploration has brought us and how much that has impacted the average American's life. Ocean exploration hasn't.
I'm sure there are many other reasons; these are just a few that I was able to type up after a few moment's thought.

I still believe there are deeper spots than the Challenger Depth in the Mariana's Trench. We should explore more of the Tonga and Philippines Trenches.
