Steely Dan - Do It Again - Guitar Solo (Cover)
Показать описание
Here's my take on one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. It was played by Denny Dias on the Steely Dan cut "Do It Again" from their 1972 debut album Can't Buy A Thrill. Dias is primarily a jazz guy and it shows in his playing. The basic ingredients of this solo are pretty mundane. Most of it is based in G Dorian (GABbCDEFG) but there are a few blue notes mixed in there along with some chromaticism. What makes the solo really cook though is the amazing rhythmic choices Dias made and the syncopation of his phrasing. Notice that there is not a single bent string in the entire solo, yet it works perfectly in a rock setting! I would love to know if this was improvised off the cuff or composed prior to the recording. Either way, it's an ingenious work from an underrated guitar hero.
If you're not familiar with Denny or this album, you'd be well served to check them both out. *TECHNICAL NOTE - the original version was recored on an "electric sitar" which was a cheap novelty instrument made by (I think) Danelectro in the 60s and 70s. I didn't have one of those so I used a Voodoo Labs Proctavia pedal to simulate a sitar as best I could. Recorded that direct to Garageband where I used one of their shitty Marshall models. It sounds like crap, but it's the best I could do for now. Let me know if you have any comments or questions. Eventually i'd like to do a tutorial on this. Cheers, VW
