Can't Buy a Thrill
1972
Donald Fagen – Lead Vocals acoustic and electric pianos, plastic (YC-30) organ,
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter – guitar, pedal steel guitar,
Denny Dias – guitar, electric sitar
Walter Becker – electric bass, backing vocals,
Jim Hodder – drums, percussion,

In the mornin you go gunnin'
For the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
And they put you on the street

[Chorus:]
Yea you go back Jack do it again
Wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back Jack do it again

When you know she's no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer
And you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one
And she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'
You'll be on your knees tomorrow

[Chorus]

Now you swear and kick and beg us
That you're not a gamblin' man
Then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table

[Chorus]

This song reminds me of a time I traveled to Egypt with my grandpa and a bunch of other guys.

The Guitar Solo alone is truly exceptional. Everything works, flawlessly. Art at its finest.

The thumbs down really do not appreciate music. This is coming from a Hardcore HipHop Head. Steely Dan are legends in their own right.👌🏾

1972 was a pleasure. Can't say the same for 2019. Nothing out there, musically. Sure glad to be born in the '50s!

My dad plays all these old school songs on his Bluetooth speaker on the weekends.

This is one of them I hear quite often, I'm starting to like it the more and more I listen to it!

Steely Dan is awesome! I've been listening to the radio and practicing on my keyboard with my brother-in-law who was a professional musician, rest his soul. He bought an album of Steely Dan and other legendary musicians. I continued to enjoy those good old music we hardly ever hear anymore.

I'm 41 and taking an American Popular Music class in Community college. We're in the 70's and we;ve got an entire powerpoint slide presentation coming up next week, solely dedicated to Steely Dan, and I'm looking forward to it! This era put out some of the greatest music ever made.

I’m an old school metal head who grew up in the 80’s. I’d heard the name ‘Steely Dan’ but never heard any of their music. Last night I was at my favourite metal bar in Birmingham, England. A friend of mine who is even older than me and who grew up in the 70’s requested this song by SD. I absolutely loved it. I’ve just bought the album and looking forward to playing it soon. This kind of music is sublime and timeless. Millennials could learn a thing or two from this kind of music.
