You could probably make a bunch of videos on this topic. Another big engineering project which comes to mind is the Erzhong press forge which is talked about in the book “china’s great wall of debt”. Basically, china has big plans for military hardware manufacturing, so they built the most powerful hydraulic press forge in the world at a facility called Erzhong. A larger press forge basically means you can make lighter and stronger metal, which is good for military vehicles like aircraft carriers or planes. The idea is the metal produced would be superior to metal made elsewhere. The problem is that the government didn’t want to take risks with the design of the press, so they based it on 1980s soviet tech which was tried and tested. As a result, much smaller and more advanced presses around the world are capable of producing overall a much better product, simply because they are more modern. Due to this flaw and a manufacturing deal falling through (it was suppose to manufacture parts of a chinese plane which was never released), as of now the Erzhong facility goes unused for most of the year and posts losses in the hundreds of millions every quarter. The chinese government keeps it alive with payments so that everyone stays employed, despite the fact that it will never make any money. It’s what is called a zombie company, which is very common in china.

Tbh that glass bridge being shut down after two weeks when an excessive structural stress was determined(too many people) is *a lot* faster than the historical US response to similar stress in our own mega projects.
