FILM DESCRIPTION:
In Nicolas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel The Witches, a young boy is vacationing at the seaside with his grandmother when he discovers that the hotel he is staying at is hosting a convention of witches. Eavesdropping on the witches, he learns that the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) has devised a plan to turn all of the children in England into mice. With creature-effects by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, The Witches was the last film Henson worked on before passing away in 1990.

This scene perfectly embodies what made the narrative so compelling - it was fantasy but it also captures the more mundane fear of child abduction - and this scene totally telegraphs that shorthand. It's so chilling because it hits that note - from the "she can't hear you" line to the moment where she correctly guesses his name. She could be a witch reading his mind OR she could have been stalking him for weeks.

I would be scared as he was if a woman with glowing purple eyes came up and tried to lure me down.The witch blew her cover by exposing her purple eyes.I can see why the grand high witch said they are disgraced.

Her acting in this scene was great. Her false friendliness was great. Odd technique though if she really wanted to lure him down. Makes you think that the witches are trained in how to communicate with children in a class or something but lack actual interpersonal skill and communication experience.

Kudos to Anne Lambton in this scene. She played the part of the creepy lady pretending to be nice very well.

Anjelica Huston obviously steals the show in this movie but aside from her this character for me is really underappreciated. She's really memorable, and sinister, she's one of my favorite witches in movies period.
