You need to consider not only your experience and financial stability, but also whether your motive for wanting one is valid - “because they look scary” doesn’t count!

Great vid, I think for first time owners the problem is they tend to leave their dogs to their own devices. And with dogs like retrievers, Newfoundland’s, etc. you can pretty much get away with that. But with guardian breeds first time owners don’t understand the amount of socialization, leadership, and patience it takes to have them be well behaved. And it literally starts day 1, in my opinion socialization is the most important type of training for guardian breeds because like Michelle said you don’t want a 100+ lbs animal that is not socialized cause they are really protective and they can misread a situation and maul another dog or another person. With that being said I do believe a first time owner can get just about any dog but you MUST do your research on the breed and PUT IN THE TIME AND EFFORT. If you do that you can get any dog if not you have an animal that will have you scared to be in your own house.

Don't own 1 yet but in my opinion how they look is a bonus as their such beautiful dog. I have a gsd and want a Corso as well from the yrs of watching people with them who own and who breed them has just made me fall more in love with them. Everything pretty much you've said can be applied to shepherds other than like you said exercise although I got a not to high prey drive and lucked out on not need a ton of exercise and the daily training helps her just chill and nap in the house. I've had giant breeds so also know how to handle big dogs especially teaching them manners as my Leonberger tried to walk all over me and found out that wasn't going to happen with me and with her size I wouldn't put up with it. But once my 16 month old shepherd has finished growing up and even better with training I plan on adding a Corso

Welcome back Michelle. Great advice... I have had Labs, Pointers a Husky and a Rottweiler. They all had different needs and different skills required for training. Never impulse purchase a specific dog breed. Do your research prior to purchasing a specific breed of dog.

You are SO right about the combination of dogs and kids. There is some benefit in having the dog in the picture before kids come along, as it is easier for a dog to understand and learn about a "new delicate mini human" when they are still a baby, rather than introducing a dog into a family that has a kid or multiple kids, and both kid & dog having to learn together, at the same time, how to behave and interact with each other, and what is/isn't acceptable.

I actually just spent some time, tonight, with a family who have two 5 yr olds and a 10 yr old, and they are giving away their French Bulldog. The dog is 3 yrs old, and sadly developed a very early cataract in his left eye. Well in the 3 yrs they've had them, the kids haven't learned how to "read" a dog properly, and the Frenchie has bit the girls in a few separate instances, and they no longer trust the dog. Even though he is a cute and smaller dog (25-30lb), they figured they could get away with having the dog and the kids, but they are *not* firm enough and don't understand how to discipline a dog, and as such, it has lead to problems. The dog is actually as sweet as can be, and very friendly, and if I never told you that he had aggression issues, you'd never believe it (I spent hours with him 1-on-1), but sadly & understandably, the little kids just couldn't grasp how to read and interact, and the trust is gone and the worry has set in for these parents. I put the lil guy on a prong collar for the first time in his life, and he was an INSTANTLY different dog, and responded so much differently to commands, and leash activity. Sadly, I also think that people worry they have to be super soft and over-coddle their dogs for fear of the social-justice warriors coming after them, so people are afraid to look into training methods that exist beyond the realm of Positive-Only Reinforcement, and the proper tools like Prong/pinch collars. This family, I'm willing to bet, fell in love with the clown-like lovable online videos that the Frenchies are notorious for, and overlooked the BULLDOG component of the breed, and how stubborn they can be, and sadly lil man is going to have to be rehomed as a result. Thankfully, they are genuinely concerned with making sure he ends up in a good home with good and qualified owners, as opposed to just dump-and-dashing the dog, or leaving him at a shelter, etc. 😟

I am tired of hearing people say that they do not recommend having a cane corso if they have never had a dog, it is like saying that I do not recommend a woman to have a strong breed of dogs because they will not be able to control it, my first dog was a Cane Corso, I just found out what I had to deal with, I studied about canine behavior and that's it, I have never had any problem with my Luna, it is simply to inform yourself well about the dogs and about the breed that you want to have conscientiously, this type of videos help to have a real idea of ​​what it is like, but remember that each dog has its unique personality
