The trick is to leverage the guitar against your body with your strumming arm so that the neck is pressing against your fingers on the fretboard. That way you're not wasting energy trying to grab the neck and hold on to it, which leads to pain in the hand and difficulty getting the right amount of tension on the strings to sound the notes.

Also try to turn your index finger so that the side of it is pressed against the strings and not the front of your finger, this makes it easier to press down because you're using more of your hand and wrist to apply tension and not just your finger.

The "Bendy Bar" isn't always an issue. It can be a very useful efficiency tool when playing fingerstyle and you only need a few of the strings for whatever riff or passage that your currently playing.
