My name is Ellen and I create step-by-step guitar tutorials here on my channel, #for3v3rfaithful 🦋Welcome to the very first episode of my brand new barre chord mini-series, where I'll explain why your GUITAR might actually be the reason you can't play barre chords! 😱

I know through personal experience and guiding many beginner guitarists over the years that barre chords are often the single most annoying struggle that can either cause you to plateau, or quit learning guitar altogether. 😔 But with a few simple fixes to improve your form, paired with the knowledge of how to practice them effectively, you'd be surprised at how a little daily effort can propel you past this hurdle and allow you to continue your journey! 🎸

In this episode, I cover the top 3 reasons your guitar might be sabotaging your barre chord progress, and what to do about it. 👍 After all, learning to play barre chords is tough enough without your guitar adding to the problem! 🙈 Throughout this series, we'll dive deeper into topics like what mistakes you should avoid, how to practice barre chords effectively, and even my tips and tricks to transitioning in and out of them faster!! 💪 But let's start by making sure you're giving yourself the best chance at succeeding by setting up your guitar for barre chord success. 🙌

Awesome video Ellen. Definitely some things in there that I had no idea about. Another thing that i really noticed was the shape of the back of the neck. I can do Barre chords on certain guitars and not on others. There is a definite difference in the back of the neck.

Fun episode, E.C.! To add to your list: I gave myself a Squier Jaguar for Christmas (yes, I opened it early) and the combination of the short scale, lighter strings and neck shape make it my easiest guitar for barres. Wish I had bought it first. They are on sale at a few of the on line stores for $350 USD. Hope you and Ads have a happy one. 🎉

The action section of this video is so spot on. I just bought an $800 Taylor guitar, which you would think would be setup pretty decently, and the string height at the 12th fret was like .12 or .13 millimeters. Which is way high. The place where I bought it reset the neck and now the action height is around .08 or .09 which made a world of difference. Music Nomad sells an action gauge which is a great little piece to let you know where your action is

🎸 You have such a unique style, and it sounds incredible on that Zager Guitar. 🔥

Great tips here! And we do appreciate the honesty of your, choice guitars. 🎸My action was so high, on my Ibanez Acoustic guitar; yet it was totally from the plastic bridge insert being massive!🗿After removing, it, I was able to file it down to a respectable size! 🎄🎊☃️🦌

love your choices for easy play guitars…i have a zager zad900 and it is a fine instrument…strings are slightly wider than normal which makes hitting some chords easier

I have trouble barring the first fret. fine everywhere else. but that first fret is murder always. I have calluses, now they have calluses.

It's the first episode, but already so interesting, even if I know it's the guitar's fault, (😉)I can't wait to learn more in the next episodes😊

likey its both barre chords are a pain at best for all of us no matter how good you are but i will say this a low action is best periodalso when you press hard on your guitar you play out of pitch/tune, the bow is not for action alone there is alot more to it then the truss rod.. i change my strings once a year because i use coated strings and watch out for light strings on acoutics it lowers the sound output alot, as for intonation acoutics are no affected but electrics are and most people but the wrong type of capo for electrics these need to be teansion adjustable mind you acousitcs should be to but if you get one that is made specif for the tennsions for acousics like Kyser capos then you should be ok .. buy the way thinner strings to thicker well ok on travel size guitars you want 13-53 to 13-56 to play easy its a tension thing on ful size acoustics the min in 11-52 on some but other wise 12-53 is where you want to be at other wise things get to much tension resulting in more problems

What about Fender? I have an acoustic-electric Fender guitar that I bought from Guitar Center. With the strings I have, I can play Barre chords. My top three strings are thick, and my bottom. Three strings are thinner. I’ve just been using the strings that come with my guitar. That’s what I get put on my guitar. Every time I get it serviced. since I’ve been playing barre chords for a long time, I’m very comfortable with it. I usually change my strings once a year in the spring. What strings would you recommend I get that can make playing barre chords easier?
However, I do struggle with transitions. If you can make a video about that, that would be great. Thanks!
