fixing the WORST DESIGN in automotive history

I don't know why designers and engineers do things the way they do, but its time to make some repairs to one of the WORST engineering choices I've encountered in a long time.

Info for the Jeep fans: It's a 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. In 1986, Chrysler rebadged the full-sized Wagoneer to "Grand Wagoneer" to distinguish it from the new smaller Wagoneer that was an uptrim model of the new Cherokee.

This particular Wagoneer began its life with the Army Corps of Engineers. Unlike most of the grand wagoneers, this one is manual everything except the trans, vinyl and no woodgrain. Someone did a fairly major upgrade on the mechanicals in the early 2000s. They swapped the original AMC 360 for a TBI 305, 700r4, Atlas II, a Dana 60 rear, and ARB air lockers.

The truck fell into my possession a few years ago, and me being a lifelong Ford guy realized a little too late that I couldn't just simply swap the LS in without other major changes. As happens with many projects at snowballed quickly. It escalated from a junkyard motor swap to a completely refurbished motor and trans, adapters, and way too much to list.

I can't tell you how thankful I am to have this project in LT's hands. He (and his crew) has been fair, patient, honest, extremely knowledgeable, and great to work with. He is treated my basket case of a Jeep the same exacting standards and professionalism that you would expect on a SEMA rig. This is not like Pimp My Ride where it's held together with bailing wire and duct tape behind the scenes. LT is the real deal. If it were not for him, that Jeep and most of the parts would still be sitting in my field rusting.

The Jeep sat outside ( I think near the ocean salt air) for a long time and has some body cancer. Upon disassembly, it turned out that the inside had a lot of cancer too, so sheet metal and new vinyl are on the to-do list as soon as he gets it running, but not before we do some trail riding with the family! This machine is being built to be an off-road memory maker, so you can understand why I can't thank him enough.

I have to say, I’m surprised a mechanic would own a Land Rover 😂 As always, love the channel! Keep up the good work, LT

They do the things they do because they don't turn wrenches. IMO, ALL engineers should have to spend 1 year in the body of engineering they study before theyre handed a degree. And that goes for ALL engineers. I was an electrician for 20 years and ran into the same issues. Poor engineering.

Yeah... both the Car Wizard and Hoovie seem to agree that the Land Rover IS, in fact, representative of the worst designs in automotive history... of course they might not have included the Yugo in their computation... who knows? I love to see you work on some of these projects you've agreed to take on. I guess you finished up that old Lincoln - THAT was cool.

What ever happened to the mustang, that was suppose to the Navigator 5.4?

I just did a water pump on an LR4 5.0 and let me tell you those vehicles are the biggest piles of shit anyone has ever made between the timing chains and the entirely plastic coolant system not to mention the leaky air. Why anyone would buy one of those is beyond me!

You say a lot of us are Ford and Chevy fans, which is true, but I think we all like vehicles in general. Especially if they’re interesting and different! I was really excited to see the Red Tacoma and White FJ you had up on the lifts though! I wouldn’t say no to any Toyota content too

StalacTITE holds "tight" to the ceiling

StalaGmites are on the Ground.

And thus, my complete portfolio of what I remember from 6 grade science

Don’t recall if a BMW derived engine went in that Rover. But I used to wrench on the BMW inline 6 of the early to mid 90’s and the water pumps were the same. Plastic impeller and on one car the fins were all disintegrated ! The aftermarket pumps that I’d replace them with were all metal impellers

As for finding a good time to film... I find that my favorite uploads are those where you time lapse and then narrate over it. That way you don't have to wait for quiet times - and many people find they save time doing it that way. I mean... we KNOW what YOU look like... and most of the time you are talking, you are talking into the camera. No offense, but I'd rather see the project... time lapse... or even slowed down a bit to show us something interesting - and then you don't have to worry about what you are saying AT ALL while you are filming. IDK if that would work for you... but that is my favorite format if it help any.

I unsubbed around the time you moved, but I always check back in on channels I enjoyed. Man, I’m loving what I’ve seen so far. Awesome LT!

What up lt, curious if there was an option to replace with aluminum junctions like the water pump. If not, sure would be nice if someone started a biz finding weird stuff and making replacements that are built tuff...

Great Video! I have the same power plant combo using the TermXMax. Would love to hear your thoughts on the install went. I have yet to do mine, as I'm waiting for other parts for my truck.

@3:41 You are correct
The speleothems with which most people are familiar are stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites grow down from the cave ceiling, while stalagmites grow up from the cave floor. It's easy to remember which is which: Stalactites have a "T" for top and stalagmites have a "G" for ground. I remember the ones that hang down have 'tities" in it...

Hey LT how are you doing all those engine swaps and meeting the emission police? Up here in Northern Colorado (Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Ft. Collins) have to have emissions every two years on older vehicles. We have to go through Air Care which is the biggest ripoff ever. AND if you have to replace the CAT one HAS to use the more expensive units. Summit, JEGS etc. won't even ship the less expensive units to CO. I have a 1994 Toy V6 that needed a new muffler so I changed it and the tailpipe out myself. The CAT was fine so I welded up the new assembly to it. A month later the truck need emissions and the Air Care people gave me grief about the work as they thought I gutted the cat which I did not. I said did it not pass emissions!! We'll yes it did so what is the Deal? Damn these people are getting to be obnoxious!! Just curious how you get through emissions down in the Springs? The Ugly truck is registered for the street correct?

4:28 why not it seems like everybody’s going to that plastic crap. As soon as you try to service it it breaks I don’t even replace them. I retrofit everything that I can if it’s possible but I know it’s not always possible. I can’t wait to see that four-wheel-drive chassis running some nine seconds.

"Stalactite" was correct; is the ones start at the top and drip down to the bottom. those drips start the "Stalagmites" that start collecting at the bottom and stacking up to the top.👍🏼

I'm kicking around the idea of doing an LS swap in my Xterra, but I don't have a shop. I'm tired of a wheezer V6 that can barely get out of its own way, let alone can't haul a trailer without needing to use the slow lane, and that's with an empty trailer!

I'll probably just replace the vehicle outright with one that runs the way I want and drive off into the sunset without looking back at the abandoned X.

My wife had an early 2000's Jetta that had a water pump with plastic impeller, driving down the freeway the impeller exploded for no reason, car was 3 years old with 32, 000 miles on it.
